Self-report instrument for digital affect tracking

Abstract

The affective responses tell us how we feel about ourselves and external objects in our vicinity. It is not surprising that the collection of emotional feedback as experienced by study participants intrigues researchers of diverse fields. With the wide adoption of mobile devices, there is an increasing demand for an instrument that is readily available and suitable for reporting temporally distributed affective data experienced by multiple subjects during longer timespans. The outcome of this study is an artefact, which allows efficient tracking and recapitulation of emotions experienced by anyone using it. In addition to individual subjects' self-analysis, the artefact will provide means for its usage as a research tool allowing gathering of affective data provided by the users that are participating in studies for its further aggregation and analysis.

A literature review was conducted on the research of emotions and relevant aspects of user interface design at the beginning of the study. Following the literature review, essential means to fulfil the requirements for the artefact were explored. After laying out the foundation, the findings were implemented to the artefact produced during the study. A usability evaluation was conducted at the end of the study to appraise the usage of the artefact as means for affect tracking.

Based on the usability evaluation the produced artefact was adequate for reporting and analysis of the emotions experienced by individual users. The artefact was established as a sufficient tool for affect tracking based on the fulfilled development goals. Even though the devised artefact is not able to fulfil the needs of all the prevailing affect theories, and there remains a substantial amount of research left to carry out in the field of affect tracking; the artefact was deemed to be fit for future development.

Tunteet kertovat meille suhtautumisestamme itseemme ja muihin tietoisuudessamme oleviin asioihin. Ei ole yllättävää, että tunnedatan kerääminen kiinnostaa useiden alojen tutkijoita. Matkapuhelinten laaja levinneisyys tuo uusia mahdollisuuksia kerätä tunnedataa yhtäaikaisesti useilta eri henkilöiltä. Tämän myötä kysyntä helposti saatavilla oleviin työkaluihin, jotka mahdollistavat ajallisesti hajautetun tunnedatan tehokkaan keräämisen, on kasvanut. Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on tuottaa työkalu, joka mahdollistaa tunteiden seuraamisen ja kirjaamisen sen käyttäjille. Sen lisäksi että työkalulla voidaan seurata henkilökohtaisia tunnekirjauksia, sitä voidaan myös käyttää tutkimustyökaluna tunnedatan keräämiseen usealta käyttäjältä samanaikaisesti.

Työn alussa suoritettiin kirjallisuuskatsaus tutkimuksiin, jotka käsittelevät vallitsevia tunneteorioita. Tämän jälkeen kartoitettiin työkalun toteuttamiseen soveltuvia käyttöliittymäratkaisuja, joiden perustalle työkalu rakennettiin. Tutkielman lopussa suoritettiin käytettävyystutkimus, jonka tarkoituksena oli arvioida työkalun käytettävyyttä ja soveltuvuutta tunteiden seurantaan.

Käytettävyystutkimuksen tuloksien perusteella työkalu todettiin soveltuvaksi tunnedatan raportointiin ja käyttäjän omien tunneraporttien analysointiin. Lisäksi työkalun todettiin täyttävän ennalta-asetetut kehitysmääreet riittävällä tasolla. Vaikka tunteiden seurannassa on vielä paljon vastaamattomia kysymyksiä ja työkalua ei voida sellaisenaan soveltaa kaikkien vallitsevien tunneteorioiden kanssa, niin työn aikana tuotettu työkalun todettiin soveltuvan kuitenkin hyvin jatkokehitykseen.
