Abstract
A recent surge in investment by major technology corporations has propelled Mixed Reality to the forefront of technological innovation. However, academic research on design for Mixed Reality lacks similar attention. The discourse remains abstract and theoretical, neglecting crucial considerations like teamwork or human factors. Incorporating these overlooked aspects, this study aims to holistically understand the challenges in the field. Hence, the study examines the design process from a team-oriented perspective while adopting an exploratory approach. Besides studying design practitioner expertise, this research integrates perspectives from key market stakeholders to effectively leverage existing industry knowledge. Situated at the intersection of academic discourses on Teamwork, Design Process, and Mixed Reality, the research utilises a thematic analysis of two primary data sets: semi-structured interviews with designers as well as data sourced from industry-generated design recommendations. The study reveals six key challenges impeding the design process for Mixed Reality. These challenges cover a broad spectrum of issues and exhibit a large variety. The found challenges provide implications to three stakeholders: design practice, design industry, and research. Understanding these challenges enables design practitioners and industry professionals to implement appropriate measures. Future research may utilise these challenges as a foundation for narrower and localised exploration.Description
