Abstract
In addition to conventional methods for disposing mine tailings, which unavoidably have tough drawbacks, a novel utilization of mine tailings is explored in this thesis. The new application of mine tailings takes advantage of the inherent physical properties of mine tailings as alternative materials for asphalt pavement. Literature review first elaborates the initiative of this study, and then surveys the interdisciplinary backgrounds relating to this study. Furthermore, it investigates the materials available for experiment, including silica, syenite, feldspar, granite and basalt. In the experiment part, a series of tests are carried out to exam physical properties of specimen made from the mine tailings, based on relevant European Norms. After analysis, it gets concluded that, except the tailings which cannot pass the sieve analysis, all the other materials can be competent as alternative fillers in hot mixed asphalt (HMA) pavement for low-volume traffic roadways, whereas the performances of those are not qualified for cold mixed asphalt (CMA) pavement, according to the industrial requirements. Finally, the thesis summarizes the key findings and limitation from this study, and proposes the future works. In conclusion, the mine tailings which have passed tests in this thesis demonstrate they are qualified fillers for hot mixture asphalt pavement. That provides us with another effective method to dispose mine tailings, meanwhile relieve the shortage of construction materials around remote mines.Description
