Abstract

Producing animals for consumption presents major environmental, ethical and health issues. Therefore, it is important to find ways to shift consumer behavior away from animal products. One interesting opportunity to support the behavior change is different mobile applications aiming to help the user when adopt a vegan diet. This research explores what kind of motivations and barriers people have regarding adopting a vegan diet and aims to find out what kind of user experience of vegan lifestyle applications those that are trying to decrease the animal products from their diet have and what kind of applications and features they would see find helpful in their journey. This research utilizes Behavior Change Wheel (BCW) framework to categorize the desired features. The findings suggest that there are several mobile applications, especially in the area of locating new restaurants and identifying vegan groceries are well known and liked by the users. New features and applications the users would like to have are for example, help with motivation through feedback and incentives and education and training on environmental effects, nutrition and finding new recipes, helping them through the barriers they have faced when decreasing animal products in their diet. This study contributes to the limited literature dietary behavior change facilitated by mobile applications, and provides valuable insights to the developers of vegan lifestyle mobile applications.
