Abstract

Heavy industries, and especially the manufacturing industry, have to pay increasing attention to the sustainability of their products and the recyclability of the products’ materials. The linear economic (‘take-make-dispose’) model is becoming less viable, and companies are seeking to implement alternative approaches for conducting business. Thus, circular economy has gained growing interest from the academic literature for its differing approach to sustainability while allowing economic growth. Circular economy takes a holistic view on products’ lifecycles and aims to create material loops in which resources utilized by products are circulated to eliminate waste. Furthermore, this holistic view also considers the efficiency of operational products which have a clear and measurable impact on the environment during their use phase. However, to enable manufacturing companies to effectively offer solutions that promote circular economy principles for the products in their installed base, they need to understand where their devices are located and how are they operated. This brings the challenge of traceability which is difficult in complex after-sales service markets and requires a systematic approach to ensure the backflow of information from customers. This thesis studied how ABB Motion, a global manufacturer of variable speed drives, motors, and generators, can implement the principles of circular economy into their after-sales service business. More specifically, this thesis researched the traceability needs for increasing the circularity of ABB Motion’s device installed base. An academic literature review was conducted to understand the main business models for circular economy in the context of after-sales service business, the options for traceability methods, and the main challenges for increasing traceability. Moreover, these findings were utilized while conducting a qualitative study on the traceability needs for ABB Motion’s installed base. In the literature review phase, life extension models, condition monitoring models, and product as a service -models were studied as potential business models for implementing circularity into a manufacturing company’s installed base. Moreover, blockchain platforms, digital twin technology, and installed base information systems were reviewed as potential methods for allowing the traceability of products after the point of sale. Finally, a systematic literature review showcased several barriers for traceability, including lack of a suitable information system, cost of implementing and operating traceability systems, data quality issues, and cybersecurity concerns. In the empirical phase, various barriers were identified for traceability and these barriers were aggregated to strategic, operational, and technological challenges according to the Gioia methodology. While these findings were mostly in line with the findings from the academic literature, the emphasis on different challenges differed. For example, the respondents put heavy emphasis on organizational inertia and the difficulty in dealing with different stakeholders. Meanwhile, the academic literature mostly highlighted technological barriers for increasing traceability. Finally, this study recommends further research into several subjects, including the generalizability of the findings and the process of transformation in relation to the challenges met by the manufacturing company.

Raskaan teollisuuden, ja etenkin valmistava teollisuuden, on tulevaisuudessa kiinnitettävä suurempaa huomiota tuotteiden ympäristöystävällisyyteen ja tuotteiden materiaalien kierrätettävyyteen. Lineaarisen liiketalousmallin (‘ota-valmista-hävitä’) elinkelpoisuus on laskenut ja yritykset etsivät vaihtoehtoisia ratkaisuja liiketoiminnan jatkamiseksi. Tästä syystä kiertotalous on saavuttanut suurempaa kiinnostusta akateemisessa kirjallisuudessa johtuen sen uudenlaisesta lähestymisestä ympäristöystävällisyyteen sekä taloudelliseen kasvuun. Kiertotalous tarkastelee tuotteiden elinkaarta kokonaisvaltaisesti ja pyrkii siten muodostamaan tuotteiden materiaalien kiertoa hävikin vähentämiseksi. Tämä kokonaisvaltainen lähestymistapa kattaa myös niiden tuotteiden operaatioiden aikaisen hävikin vähentämisen, joilla on selkeä sekä mitattava vaikutus ympäristöön niiden käytön aikana. Jotta valmistavan teollisuuden yritykset voivat tarjota kiertotalouden mukaisia palveluita laitekannan tuotteille, heidän on muun muassa tiedettävä laitteiden sijainti sekä miten asiakkaat käyttävät yrityksen laitteita. Tämä johdattelee tuotteiden jäljitettävyyteen, joka on etenkin haastavaa monimutkaisissa myynninjälkeisissä palveluliiketoimintaympäristöissä sekä vaatii yritykseltä systemaattista lähestymistä asiakkaidensa tiedonkeruuseen. Tämän diplomityö tutki ABB Motionin, joka on globaali taajuusmuuttaja, moottori sekä generaattori valmistaja, mahdollisuutta implementoida kiertotalousperiaatteita heidän myynninjälkeiseen palveluliiketoimintaansa. Tämä diplomityö selvitti jäljitettävyyteen liittyviä tarpeita kiertotalouden arvojen toteuttamiseksi ABB Motionin laitekannassa. Akateemisen kirjallisuuskatsauksen avulla pyrittiin ymmärtämään kiertotalouden liiketoimintamalleja myynninjälkeisillä palveluliiketoimintamarkkinoilla, vaihtoehtoja jäljitettävyyden mahdollistamiseksi, sekä suurimpia haasteita jäljitettävyyden parantamiseksi. Kirjallisuuskatsauksen havaintoja käytettiin tämän diplomityön kvalitatiivisessa tutkimuksessa, joka selvitti ABB Motionin laitekannan jäljitettävyyden tarpeita. Akateeminen kirjallisuuskatsaus tutki elinkaaripidennysmalleja, laitekannan monitorointimalleja ja tuotepalvelumalleja mahdollisina liiketoimintamalleina kiertotaloudellisuuden implementoinniksi valmistavan teollisuuden yrityksen laitekantaan. Myös lohkoketjualustojen, digitaalisen kaksosteknologian sekä laitekanta tietojärjestelmien potentiaalia tutkittiin mahdollisina vaihtoehtoina jäljiteltävyyden lisäämiseksi. Lopuksi suoritettu systemaattinen kirjallisuuskatsaus osoitti useita jäljitettävyyteen liittyviä haasteita, joita olivat esimerkiksi sopivan informaatiosysteemin puute, jäljitettävyyden kustannukset, tiedon epäluotettavuus sekä tietoturvahaasteet. Empiirinen tutkimusosio toi esiin useita jäljitettävyyteen liittyviä haasteita, jotka aggregoitiin Gioia metodologian mukaisesti strategisiin, operatiivisiin ja teknologisiin haasteisiin. Vaikka tämän vaiheen havainnot olivat suurimmilta osin akateemisen kirjallisuuskatsauksen mukaisia, näiden kahden vaiheen asettama painoarvo eri haasteita kohtaan erosi. Esimerkiksi, vastaajat erityisesti painottivat haasteita liittyen yrityksen kykyyn vaihtaa toimintatapojaan sekä ulkopuolisten sidosryhmien kanssa toimimiseen. Sen sijaan akateeminen kirjallisuus painotti teknologiaan liittyviä ongelmia jäljiteltävyyden lisäämiseksi. Tämä diplomityö myös ehdottaa jatkotutkimusta liittyen muun muassa saatujen tulosten yleistettävyyteen sekä muutosprosessin vaikutusta yrityksen kokemiin haasteisiin.
