Abstract
This thesis studies the design of an in-ceiling loudspeaker, including the working principles, technology trends and the current market to develop and manufacture new in-ceiling loudspeaker. The thesis demonstrates that Power over Ethernet can provide significant technical benefits in the loudspeaker products, and this technology is implemented in the in-ceiling loudspeaker design during the product development process. The thesis covers the methods for running the product development project, including setting the project targets, evaluating the challenges, identifying the customer needs and product deliverables, to plan the loudspeaker development process. The product concept is then created, including an industrial design serving the acoustic working principles and following the agreed visual aesthetics. The development process continues with the product design to deliver the technical specifications for the loudspeaker parts. Next, the product goes through multiple prototyping rounds to test the components and acoustical performance of the loudspeaker. Also, manufacturing plan is developed to organize the production process. The mass manufacturing starts after evaluation of the final prototype with accepted product cost. Next, the product is delivered to the distributors or to end users. This thesis also discusses the last stage of the development life cycle, the product design maintenance, which is performed by the customer service team as a part of supporting users. Also, the engineering team analyses the production process to modify the product design and improve the manufacturability. The in-ceiling loudspeaker design project has been run according to the studied project management methods and Genelec development practices. Risk assessment and the optimized approach of running the loudspeaker product development process are discussed in this work. This work results in the completed product design, prototypes and review of the in-ceiling loudspeaker manufacturability. An evaluation of the loudspeaker design process concludes the thesis.Description
