Abstract
This study explores the current social and political situation regarding the mul-tiplicity of cultures in Finland and their integration. It is a collaborative project, designed to operate on many levels, investigating the role art can play in areas of education and learning, interacting with the public and governmental programmes. This research revolves around interviews with people working within the food and integration sectors in Finland, workshops with small groups, and public interventions/exchanges. Each element has been documented by using one or more of the following methods: photographs, video, voice recording, personal notes, stories, drawings. Food is used as a mediator to connect people and transfer cultural values through the practice of storytelling. As a result of this study, personal stories regarding food have been artistically explored and collated becoming a collective narrative that considers people’s similarities and differences. This process has allowed for the discussion of delicate issues pertaining to an increasingly multicultural Finn¬ish society. Therefore, this study can be an example for understanding the society we live in and the role art can play in integration for newcomers, whilst exposing the general public to other cultures and traditions in Finland. The work has been presented in the form of public interventions, videos, gallery installations, a publication, and online as a website and blog; allowing not only participants to engage but also the general public.Description
