Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the contribution of a business plan competition: Venture Cup, on academic entrepreneurship in Finland. This study aims at contributing to the field of research of academic entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial process. More specifically, the study focuses on entrepreneurial intentions, opportunity recognition and the creation of new knowledge-based firms from the perspective of the studied intervention. The study comprises a thorough theory review on entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial intentions, opportunity recognition and new venture creation. The empirical data of this study includes a survey and a case study. The sample for the survey was comprised of the participants of Venture Cup business plan competition and students of different entrepreneurship courses. A case study of eight finalists of the competition was carried out to further explore the contribution of Venture Cup to the entrepreneurial process. The study suggests that the contribution of the Venture Cup business plan competition to the academic entrepreneurship ranges from positively influencing entrepreneurial alertness and intentions to the development of human and social capital. Utilizing evidence from multiple sources, the research, proves that the core contribution is the development of emerging business ideas into business plans, which is realized as an interaction of the efforts of the participants, the three-staged and scheduled competition process as well as the evaluation and feedback provided by various experts. The study concludes that new venture creation is a process where different external factors affect the process at different phases. Thus, it is difficult to assess the contribution of Venture Cup business plan competition alone. This study noted also that positive evaluation of a business plan and a business opportunity by the experts may not result in a commercial success.

Työn tavoitteena on tutkia Venture Cup -liiketoimintasuunnitelmakilpailun merkitystä akateemisen yrittäjyyden edistäjänä Suomessa. Työ pyrkii tuottamaan uutta ymmärrystä akateemiseen yrittäjyyteen ja yrittäjyysprosesseihin liittyviin tutkimusalueisiin keskittyen erityisesti yrittäjyysaikomuksiin, liikeideoiden tunnistamiseen sekä uusien osaamispohjaisten yritysten synnyttämiseen tutkittavan intervention tarkastelukulmasta. Työhön sisältyy perusteellinen katsaus teoriaan yrittäjyydestä, yrittäjyysintentioista ja yrittäjyysprosessista. Työn empiirinen osuus käsittää sekä kysely- että tapaustutkimuksen. Kyselyn otos muodostui Venture Cup -liiketoimintasuunnitelmakilpailun osallistujista sekä eri yrittäjyyskurssien opiskelijoista. Kilpailun kolmannen vaiheen kahdeksan finalistin tapaustutkimus haki syvempää ymmärrystä Venture Cupin vaikutuksesta yrittäjyysprosessiin. Tutkimuksen mukaan Venture Cup -liiketoimintasuunnitelmakilpailun vaikutus yltää yrittäjyysvalppauden ja yrittäjyysaikomusten kehittämisestä inhimillisen ja sosiaalisen pääoman kasvattamiseen. Moneen eri lähteeseen pohjautuen tutkimus osoittaa kilpailun keskeisen vaikutuksen olevan liikeideoiden jalostuminen liiketoimintasuunnitelmiksi, joka toteutuu osallistujien oman työpanoksen, kolmivaiheisen aikataulutetun kilpailuprosessin sekä asiantuntijoiden tuottaman arvion ja palautteen yhteisvaikutuksena. Tutkimuksessa päädyttiin siihen, että uusien yritysten synnyttäminen on monivaiheinen prosessi, jonka eri vaiheissa vaikuttavat erilaiset ulkoiset tekijät. Tämän takia pelkän Venture Cupin vaikutusta on vaikea arvioida. Yksi työn havainnoista oli, että asiantuntijoiden positiivisesti arvioima liiketoimintasuunnitelma ja -mahdollisuus eivät välttämättä johda kaupalliseen menestykseen.
