Abstract

Keramiikkareliefit ovat seinälle ripustettavia keraamisia taideteoksia. Tämä opinnäyte tutkii suurikokoisia keraamiikkareliefiteoksia sekä niiden toteutusta. Opinnäyte käsittelee reliefien historiaa keskittyen suomalaisiin 1900-luvun keramiikkareliefitaiteilijoihin Michael Schilkiniin, Birger Kaipiaiseen ja Rut Brykiin, sekä heidän vaikutukseensa suomalaiseen keramiikkareliefitaiteeseen. Opinnäytteen tutkimuskysymys tarkastelee, miten suomalaisen 1900-luvun keramiikkareliefitaiteen keskeiset taiteilijat sekä keramiikan tekniset ominaisuudet vaikuttavat suurikokoisen keraamisen reliefiteokseni suunnitteluun ja toteutukseen. Osana opinnäytettä toteutettiin produktio, jossa suunniteltiin keramiikka- reliefiteos, sekä toteutettiin teoksesta näyteosuus. Opinnäytteessä todetaan, että keramiikkareliefien toteutus vaatii taiteilijalta niin materiaalin ymmärrystä kuin teknistä suunnittelutaitoa.

Ceramic reliefs are ceramic artworks designed to be hung on a wall. This thesis examines large-scale ceramic relief works and their creation. It discusses the history of reliefs, focusing on Finnish 20th-century ceramic relief artists Michael Schilkin, Birger Kaipiainen and Rut Bryk, as well as their influence on Finnish ceramic relief art. The research question investigates how key Finnish ceramic relief artists of the 20th century, together with the technical properties of ceramics, affect the design and execution of my large-scale ceramic relief artwork. As part of the thesis, a production component was carried out in which a ceramic relief artwork was designed and a sample section of the piece was produced. The thesis concludes that creating ceramic reliefs requires the artist to possess both an understanding of the material and strong technical planning skills.
