Abstract

This Master's thesis focuses on well-being preferences of Generation Y employees working in multinational corporations. This study is a single case study of which the case company is Danske Bank Oyj. The thesis looks for answers for the work well-being preferences of Generation Y employees working in multinational corporations and seeks to identify the characteristics related to Generation Y as employees, especially; how to maintain the interest of the Generation Y employees and to engage them into the organization. In the theoretical framework of the study I review the different generations on the labor market today, and their generalized characteristics defined by the existing literature, work well-being as a concept and work well-being issues related to Generation Y employees and multigenerational organizations. I review also the career development ambitions of the Generation Y employees and their attitude towards management and supervision in the company. This Master's thesis is a qualitative study with a sample of ten Generation Y employees' interviews, with emphasis on verbal instead of numerical data. The research questions have been designed to give an overall picture of the level of work well-being of Generation Y employees working in a MNC, and also to provide information on what Generation Y employees consider important for their work well-being. The study results are overall in line with the existing literature. The existing literature highlights the importance of the awareness of generational differences in multigenerational organizations in order to maintain good levels of work well-being. This kind of information is useful in different levels of organization in order to improve processes, increase work well-being and motivation, and at the same time increase effectiveness of the organization. This study has shown how dedicated generation Y employees are to their work but at the same time they are not as committed to the organizations and corporations. Generation Y employees underline good management, relationships and work community in their work well-being. They desire instant feedback from the supervisors and demand a lot from them. Generation Y employees are interested in company's values and commitments and find engaging to the organization challenging if the company's values are not shared by the individual.
