Abstract

High growth in firms has gained popularity throughout the years, bringing controversy along the way. Policy makers are interested to support this type of companies to affect positively the economy and yet their unpredictable nature makes it difficult. From the literature the high growth phase it seems either as random or because of different factors. Either way the few firms that reach this phase do show a high level of performance and innovation compared to average firms. From management literature theory dynamic capabilities support the companies to adapt easily to changes in their environment and respond to challenges, as well take advantage of key opportunities and constant learning. This research explores the possibility that dynamic capabilities developed in the firms, which cause better performance and competitive advantage, could also lead the to a high growth period. This research is done as a systematic review. Considering the scientific research and materials already available on both topics, dynamic capabilities and high growth, it is possible to find connections by making a review of the topics from previous studies and their results. Specific criteria to fit the operations management context were stablished to search and select the scientific articles in high quality academic journals. The articles were carefully read under the organizing capabilities framework guidelines, the information was extracted, tabulated, and analysed supported on Power BI to draw conclusions and provide answer to the research questions. Power BI was used to create relationship models, between the organizing framework of dynamic capabilities and high growth as they were in the results of the articles. From the systematic review research perform on the articles it was possible to provide some answers as the relationships found in the data. Dynamic capabilities were found to serve as influencers in the likelihood of high growth. The persistence of growth remained unclear, as many of the high – growth firms in this phase found themselves in later periods in a stable or even decline period of growth. Further research is proposed on how to develop the necessary managerial skills for decision making leading to growth and managing resources during growth at a global scale, especially in the entrepreneurial field.
