Abstract

Master of Arts thesis How To Die Young As Old As Possible is an exploration through the many entities that have influenced me and my work. It studies how those have affected on the development of my artistic practices and thinking. It consists of the text that is spread to three parts and the installation Transitions that was exhibited in the Finnish Museum of Photography in the spring of 2023. Both the text and the artistic work are highly personal; looking back to my journey to becoming a professional artist. My artistic work is defined by observation and curiosity. Photography serves me as a vessel for organizing what is around. Through making photographs I aim to make sense of the world. In my writing I describe the importance of photography in my life and how it gives me the sense of belonging and purpose. In this thesis the writing and photographs go hand in hand painting the picture of my artistic work and my approach to photography and creativity. I used the blank pages as any other space where I decide to exhibit my work. It starts with an autobiographical stories continuing to describing my practice and answering to the question what value does creativity hold in my life. This text is also an exploration space; photographic, physical and personal. It is about getting out of the house, constantly looking, composing and arranging. Being present and curious; pursuing to find joy in an ever-changing world. Every image counts.

Taiteen maisterin opinnäytetyö How To Die Young As Old As Possible tutkii taiteellista työskentelyäni niihin vaikuttaneiden kokonaisuuksien kautta ja kuinka ne ovat vaikuttaneet sen, sekä ajatteluni kehittymiseen. Opinnäytetyö koostuu kolmeen osaan jaetusta tekstistä, sekä installaatiosta Transitions, joka oli esillä Suomen valokuvataiteen museossa keväällä 2023. Molemmat, teksti ja taiteellinen osa, ovat erittäin henkilökohtaisia; katsoen taaksepäin matkaani ammattitaiteilijaksi. Taiteellista työskentelyäni määrittää havainnointi ja uteliaisuus. Valokuvaus palvelee minua alustana, jonka avulla saan järjestystä ympäröivään maailmaan. Valokuvan avulla pyrin ymmärtämään. Tekstissäni kirjoitan valokuvauksen tärkeydestä elämässäni ja kuinka sen kautta saan tunteen kuuluvuudesta ja tarkoituksesta. Tässä opinnäytetyössä teksti ja kuvat kulkevat käsi kädessä maalaten kuvan taiteellisesta työstäni ja lähestymisestäni valokuvaukseen ja luovuuteen. Käytin tyhjiä sivuja kuten mitä tahansa tilaa, jossa esitän teoksiani. Opinnäytetyö alkaa omaelämänkerrallisilla tarinoilla jatkuen kuvailuun praktiikoistani, vastaten kysymykseen millaista arvoa luovuus tuo elämääni. Teksti on myös tutkielma tilasta; valokuvallisesta, fyysisestä ja henkilökohtaisesta. Se kertoo menemisestä ulos maailmaan, jatkuvasta katsomisesta ja järjestämisestä. Olemisesta läsnä ja utelias; tavoitellen löytämään iloa muuttuvasta maailmasta. Jokainen valokuva on merkittävä.
