Abstract

This chapter explores the Finnish video game industry’s emphasis on openness, information sharing, and trust. It details how these practices facilitate benefits such as diversification and workforce mobility, enhancing firms’ ability to avoid design redundancies and foster innovation in coopetitive environments. By studying relationships and informal knowledge sharing, the chapter shows how these interactions serve as microfoundations for open innovation and community resilience. Drawing on longitudinal data (2012–2020), the analysis highlights how informal exchanges preserve design histories and aid decision-making, contributing to unique, competitive game designs. Additionally, the chapter identifies challenges that may arise when companies go public, face legal constraints, or prioritize firm-level objectives over community goals. Recommendations for creative industries include promoting trust-based, open information environments and coopetitive collaboration to sustain innovation and adaptability in rapidly evolving markets.
