Abstract
A reconstituted family is characterised by two adult individuals forming a new unit with their own children from previous relationships, and often includes both stepchildren and joint, biological children. It is the third most common family structure in Finland, following the nuclear family and the single-parent family. This paper explores whether being a member of a reconstituted family is associated with a child’s lower educational outcomes in comparison to their nuclear-reared peers. It also explores the channels through which an association would operate, via a literature review. The results show that reconstituted family structure is not associated with children's 9th grade GPAs when mother fixed effects are employed as well as demographic and parental controls.Description
