Abstract

Tämän diplomityön aiheena on kauan lähes hoidotta olleen historiallisen puutarhan restaurointisuunnitelma, ja kohteena Suomenlinnan vankila-alueella sijaitseva Kirsikkapuutarha. 1700-luvulta periytyvän puutarhan vielä säilyneitä puutarhataiteellisia arvoja uhkaavat umpeenkasvu, tyypillisten kasvilajien katoaminen ja rakenteiden tuhoutuminen. Vuosikymmeniä lähes ilman hoitoa ollut puutarha tarvitsee suunnitelmallista kunnostusta, jatkuvaa hoitoa ja sopivan käyttötarkoituksen, jotta sen jäljellä olevat arvot voidaan säilyttää ja suojella. Elinvoimainen ja hoidettu kulttuuriympäristö lisää ihmisten hyvinvointia. Maailmanperintökohteena Suomenlinnan puistoihin ja puutarhoihin kohdistuu turismin voimakas kasvu muiden suurten muutosvoimien, kaupungistumisen ja ilmastonmuutoksen lisäksi. Näiden paineiden lisäksi Kirsikkapuutarhan tulevaisuuden hahmotteluun vaikuttavat sen arvot sekä monet erityispiirteet, kuten sen syrjäisyys ja pieni koko. Työn keskeinen tavoite oli sovittaa Kirsikkapuutarhan tuleva käyttö sen arvojen säilyttämiseen ja suojeluun. Työssä selvitettiin, mitkä ovat maailmanperintökohteeseen kuuluvan Kirsikkapuutarhan vaalittavat arvot ja erityispiirteet sekä miten niitä vaalitaan parhaiten. Tutkimusmetodina käytettiin historiatutkimusta, joka perustui historia- ja arkistolähteisiin. Lähdeaineiston vähäisyys loi työhön erityisen haasteen. Kirsikkapuutarhan restauroinnin tavoitteita ovat sen arvojen säilyttäminen ja niiden heikentymisen pysäyttäminen sekä puutarhan ottaminen käyttöön, joka sovitetaan sen arvoihin ja erityispiirteisiin. Tavoitteena on myös hyödyntää puutarhan potentiaali maailmanperintökohteen erityislaatuisena osana tarjoamalla oleskelupaikka kahdelle Suomenlinnan maailmanperintökohteen keskeiselle sidosryhmälle – ensin vankilan vangeille ja sitten Suomenlinnan asukkaille. Restaurointisuunnitelma painottuu historiallisen puutarhan alueelle, mutta puutarhan arvoja ja toimintoja on tarkasteltu laajemmalla alueella, jotta puutarha asettuu luontevaksi osaksi ympäröivää kaupunkirakennetta toimintoineen. Suunnitelma on jaettu kahteen vaiheeseen. Ensimmäisen restaurointivaiheen jälkeen puutarhan käyttäjiä ovat Suomenlinnan vankilan vangit. Kirsikkapuutarha avataan asukkaille sen toisen restaurointivaiheen jälkeen. Toisen vaiheen tärkein tavoite onkin valmistaa puutarhaa suuremmille käyttäjämäärille. Suunnitelman painopiste on ensimmäisessa restaurointivaiheessa, toinen vaihe esitetään viitteellisemmin.

The theme of this master’s thesis is the restoration plan of a historic garden which has been a long time on minimal management, and the subject is Cherry Garden in the area of Suomenlinna Prison. The still-preserved values of the 18th century garden are threatened by overgrowth, the disappearance of typical plant species and the destruction of structures. The garden, which has been virtually without management for decades, needs systematic conservation and restoration, continuous maintenance and appropriate use in order to preserve and protect its remaining values. A vibrant and well-maintained cultural environment increases people’s well-being. As a World Heritage Site, Suomenlinna’s parks and gardens are experiencing a strong tourism growth alongside other major forces of change, urbanization and climate change. In addition to these pressures, the future outline of Cherry Garden is influenced by its values and many special features, such as its remoteness and small size. The main goal of this thesis was to adjust the future use of Cherry Garden to the preservation and protection of its values. The thesis explored the values and characteristics to be cherished in Cherry Garden, and how to best foster them. The research method used was historical research based on historical and archival sources. The lack of source material created a particular challenge for the work. The goals of the restoration of Cherry Garden are to preserve its values and stop them from deteriorating, and to find the garden a purpose that is adapted to its values and characteristics. The aim is also to harness the potential of the garden as a unique part of the World Heritage Site by providing a place of recreation for two key stakeholders of Suomenlinna World Heritage Site - first the prison inmates and then the residents of Suomenlinna. The restoration plan focuses on the area of the historic garden, but the values and functions of the garden have been examined on a wider area, so that the garden becomes a functional part of the surrounding urban structure. The plan is divided into two phases. After the first restoration phase, the garden will be used by the prisoners of Suomenlinna Prison. After its second restoration phase, Cherry Garden will be opened to the residents. Hence, the main goal of the second phase is to prepare the garden for a larger number of users. The focus of the plan is on the first phase of the restoration, the second phase being presented in a more suggestive way.
