The invisible shadow

Abstract

Thesis, ´ The Invisible Shadow´ - Individuals Sense of Mortality and its Manifestations in Western Culture consists of three parts; my monograph At The Heart of It All published by Hatje Cantz Verlag, exhibition at Valokuvakeskus Peri and this written part.

My masters thesis a study of the individual contemplating upon his mortality, how one looks upon his own existence, at the same time seeing the beginning and sensing the inevitable end. How the knowledge of this absurdity of existence transform into social constructs and eschatological fantasies that try to make the sense of ending bearable. In the written part I study the mechanisms and history of mortality through an existentialist viewpoint.

The visual part of the thesis At The Heart of It All consists of a exhibition in Photocentre Peri (November 2018) and a monograph published by Hatje Cantz Verlag (Berlin). The images of the series act as are spaces within spaces, where the remnants of humanity exist in the form of wrecks, ruins and absence. Emblems where time is made visible and places act as repositories of memories. All in all At The Heart of it All, consists of 45 images that have been exhibited in various countries around Europe and several works appear both in private and museum collections, both in Finland and Europe.

Lopputyö ´´ The Invisible Shadow´ - Individuals Sense of Mortality and its Manifestations in Western Culture koostuu kolmesta osasta, tekstiosuudesta, sekä kuvallisesta osuudesta At The Heart of it All joka koostuu Saksalaisen kustantajan Hatje Cantzin vuonna 2017 julkaisemasta valokuvakirjastani At The Heart of It All:sta sekä näyttelystä Valokuvakeskus Peri:ssä Marraskuussa 2018.

Lopputyön aiheena on yksilön kuolevaisuutensa kohtaaminen ja miten käsite heijastuu erinnäisissä muodoissa vallitsevaan yhteiskuntaan sosiaalisten rakenteiden ja eskatologisten fantasioiden muodossa. Kirjallisessa osuudessa tutkin aihetta eksistentialistisesta näkökulmasta käsin.

Kuvallinen osuus At The Heart of it All käsittää kokonaisuudessaan 45 valokuvaa ja kuvia on eri muodoissa esillä saman nimisessä kirjassa ja lukuisissa näyttelyissä sekä yksityisissä ja museokokoelmissa eri puolilla Suomea ja Eurooppaa.
