Rheology and structure of ionically self-assembling complex fluids

Abstract

Large amplitude oscillatory shear flow (LAOS) was employed in order to macroscopically align the locally ordered ionically self-assembled (ISA) materials. In our experiments, we used one oligomeric compound, ionic ally self-assembled perylene-surfactant complex, and three polymeric compounds, ionic ally self-assembled polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes with different surfactants. Simple rheological measurements were conducted in order to reveal the most suitable parameters for the shear-alignment of the studied materials. The morphological investigations were performed in-situ with small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France. It turned out to be very difficult to align the studied materials by inducing oscillatory shear flow. It was furthermore found that one of the studied polymeric compounds was not suitable for the rheological measurements. When the temperature was suitable for the rheological measurements, we observed that the colour had changed from transparent to brown implying that the material began to degrade. For the other studied polymeric materials the rheological data showed that we had found suitable parameters for extending the order from the local to global length scale but the simultaneously obtained scattering patterns showed hardly any change as a function of time. This could be because of the high molecular weight of the polyelectrolytes used in these complexes. However, the perylene-surfactant complex showed moderate increase in the alignment during the oscillatory shear. The behaviour of the rheological variables as a function of time was characteristic for an aligned system. In addition, the simultaneously obtained scattering patterns were in agreement with this interpretation.

Lokaalisti itsejärjestäytyneitä materiaaleja voidaan sopivissa olosuhteissa orientoida makroskooppisesti suuren amplitudin oskilloivaa virtauskenttää hyväksikäyttäen. Tässä työssä tutkittiin erityisesti ionisesti itsejärjestäytyneiden materiaalien rakenteita oskilloivassa virtauskentässä ja pyrittiin löytämään mielekkäät parametrit makroskooppisen rakenteen syntymiseen. Kokeissamme käytettiin yhtä oligomeeristä yhdistettä, ionisesti itsejärjestäytynyttä peryleeni-surfaktantti kompleksia, ja kolmea polymeerimateriaalia, ionisesti itsejärjestäytyneitä polyelektrolyytti-surfaktantti komplekseja erilaisilla surfaktanteilla. Virtauskentän synnyttämiä morfologioita tutkittiin samanaikaisesti pienen kulman röntgensironnalla yhteiseurooppalaisessa synkrotronikeskuksessa (ESRF, Grenoble, Ranska). Tutkittavien materiaalien orientointi oskilloivan virtauskentän avulla osoittautui erittäin hankalaksi. Lisäksi havaittiin, että yksi tutkituista polymeerimateriaaleista ei ollut suotuisa edes reologisiin mittauksiin. Kun lämpötila reologisten mittausten suorittamiseen oli mielekäs, materiaalin varin havaittiin muuttuvan läpinäkyvästä ruskeaksi, mikä on merkki materiaalin rakenteiden hajoamisesta. Muiden polymeerinäytteiden osalta reologiset mittaustulokset osoittivat merkkejä lokaalin rakenteen ulottumisesta globaaliin mittaskaalaan, mutta samanaikaisesti mitatut sirontakuviot eivät osoittaneet juurikaan muutosta ajan funktiona. Tämä saattaa johtua kompleksien synteeseissä käytetystä polyelektrolyytin korkeasta molekyylipainosta. Peryleenisurfaktantti-kompleksin osalta sekä reologiset mittaustulokset että sirontakuviot osoittivat kohtalaista oskilloivan virtauskentän synnyttämää orientaation kasvua. Reologisten parametrien aikakäyttäytyminen oli hyvin tyypillistä järjestyvälle systeemille, jota tukivat samanaikaisesti mitatut sirontakuviot.
