Abstract
The management of products is a complicated task involving large networks of people, organizations, and information systems. Product lifecycle management is a business approach that attempts to manage this task by sharing information related to products in different phases of the product lifecycle. Information systems form a major component of product lifecycle management, and product data management systems are among the most important systems. Product data management systems have traditionally focused on the management of information and files in the development phase of products. The main objective of this thesis was to implement a preselected product data management system in a case company. The implementation method was derived from the literature, and the implementation was treated as an information system project with business process reengineering as a major component. The implementation project started with an analysis of the products, product data, processes, and information systems of the company. The practical side of the project consisted of studying the properties of the implemented system, determining the role of the system, and configuring the system. The configuration of the system included, for example, defining workflows, users, and system attributes. As a result of the project, the role of the system was defined for the most part, and the system provided functionality that supported the processes of the company. The secondary objective of this thesis was to assess the situation of the case company with regard to product lifecycle management. The assessment considered the information obtained from the analysis and the effects of the implementation of the product data management system. The assessment resulted in the conclusion that the company was in the beginning of developing its product lifecycle management, and this thesis provided a basis for further development.Tuotteiden hallinta on monimutkainen tehtävä, johon osallistuu ihmisten, organisaatioiden ja tietojärjestelmien laajoja verkostoja. Tuotteen elinkaaren hallinta on lähestymistapa, joka pyrkii suorittamaan tuotteiden hallinnan jakamalla tuotetietoa tuotteen elinkaaren eri vaiheissa. Tietojärjestelmät ovat keskeinen osa tuotteen elinkaaren hallintaa, ja tuotetiedon hallintajärjestelmät kuuluvat näistä tärkeimpiin. Tuotetiedon hallintajärjestelmät ovat perinteisesti keskittyneet tuotekehitysvaiheen tiedon ja tiedostojen hallintaan. Tämän diplomityön päätavoite oli ennalta valitun tuotetiedon hallintajärjestelmän käyttöönotto kohdeyrityksessä. Käyttöönoton toteutustapa johdettiin kirjallisuudesta. Käyttöönottoa tarkasteltiin tietojärjestelmäprojektina, jossa yrityksen prosessien kehittämisellä on merkittävä rooli. Käytöönottoprojekti alkoi yrityksen tuotteiden, tuotetiedon, prosessien ja tietojärjestelmien analysoinnilla. Projektin käytännöllisessä osassa käyttöönotetun järjestelmän ominaisuuksia tutkittiin, järjestelmän rooli määritettiin ja järjestelmä konfiguroitiin. Järjestelmän konfigurointi sisälsi muun muassa työkiertojen, käyttäjien ja järjestelmäparametrien määrittämisen. Projektin ansiosta järjestelmän rooli saatiin pääosin määritettyä ja järjestelmän toiminnallisuus saatiin tukemaan yrityksen prosesseja. Diplomityön toissijainen tavoite oli arvioida kohdeyrityksen tuotteen elinkaaren hallinnan tilanne. Arvioinnissa otettiin huomioon analyysin tulokset ja tuotetiedon hallintajärjestelmän käyttöönotto. Arvioinnin johtopäätökseksi tuli, että yrityksen tuotteen elinkaaren hallinnan kehittäminen on alkutekijöissään, ja tämä diplomityö loi pohjan tulevalle kehitykselle.Description
