Abstract

The goal of this study is to identify the methods and processes that can be used to evaluate usability in mobile operating systems for touchscreen smartphones. The theory part presents the concepts of usability and user-cantered design and how they can be integrated in product design and development. Several different usability evaluation methods are reviewed. The benefits, drawbacks and usability factors of smartphone touchscreens are also presented. In the research part, the usability of two different applications of the Samsung Wave 578 smartphone is evaluated. In the first usability evaluation, the usability of the Samsung Apps application store is evaluated with the heuristic evaluation method. As a result of the first usability evaluation, a total of 12 usability issues were found. The results show that good usability in tasks related to money transfer is very important. It is also important to display all contents in the same language. The second usability evaluation is a usability test of the NFC function in the Wave 578 smartphone. The results of the test show that the usability of the NFC function is quite good and the users are satisfied with the user experience of the NFC function. A total of 7 usability issues were found in the test. Both methods, heuristic evaluation and usability test, are suitable for evaluating the usability in mobile operating systems for touchscreen smartphones. The selection of the usability evaluation method depends on the phase of the product as well as constraints such as time, money or available human resources.

Tämän tutkielman päämääränä on tunnistaa metodit ja prosessit, joita voidaan käyttää käytettävyyden arviointiin kosketusnäytöllisten älypuhelimien käyttöjärjestelmissä. Teoriaosuus esittelee käytettävyyden ja käyttäjäkeskeisen suunnittelun konseptit ja niiden integroimisen tuotesuunnitteluun ja -kehitykseen. Useita käytettävyyden arviointimenetelmiä tarkastellaan. Teoriaosuudessa esitellään myös älypuhelimien kosketusnäyttöjen etuja, haittoja ja käytettävyystekijöitä. Tutkimusosuudessa arvioidaan kahden älypuhelinsovelluksen käytettävyyttä. Tutkittava älypuhelin on Samsungin Wave 578. Ensimmäisessä käytettävyyden arvioinnissa Samsung Apps -sovelluksen käytettävyyttä arvioidaan heuristisesti. Ensimmäisen arvioinnin tuloksena esitetään 12 käytettävyysongelmaa. Tulokset osoittavat, että rahan siirtoon liittyvissä tehtävissä hyvä käytettävyys on erittäin tärkeää. On myös tärkeää esittää kaikki sisältö käyttäen samaa kieltä. Toisena käytettävyyden arviointina tehdään käytettävyystesti Wave 578 älypuhelimen NFC toiminnolle. Testin tulokset osoittavat, että NFC-toiminnon käytettävyys on melko hyvällä tasolla ja käyttäjät ovat tyytyväisiä NFC-toiminnon käyttäjäkokemukseen. Testin tuloksena löydettiin 7 käytettävyysongelmaa. Sekä heuristinen arviointi, että käytettävyystesti sopivat hyvin käytettävyyden arviointiin kosketusnäytöllisten älypuhelimien käyttöjärjestelmissä. Käytettävyyden arviointimenetelmän valinta riippuu tuotteen tuotekehityksen vaiheesta sekä rajoitteista, kuten aika, raha tai käytettävissä oleva työvoima.
