Abstract

A prototype to continuously measure water content from flue gas was developed and built in this thesis. Two different techniques were theoretically compared for this purpose. Both of which use zirconium-based oxygen sensors. Comparison included measurements based on a wet-dry-oxygen method and a modified UEGO sensor system. The modified UEGO sensor system was preferred and built to the state of prototype. Prototype was designed using a development platform as a starting point and adding necessary electronics to it using daughter boards designed in this thesis. A heated and insulated measurement block was designed to hold two sensors in series. One of the sensors was used to continuously measure direct oxygen concentration and the other was used to decompose water molecules and measure the increase in oxygen level caused by the released oxygen ions in this phenomenon. The phenomenon was created by increasing the reference voltage on the sensor’s electrode form 450 mV to 1080 mV. Tentative performance characteristics of the prototype were tested. It was compared against FTIR- and paramagnetic analyzers that are used as a part of a TÜV-certified CEMS systems. Linear response for O2 was achieved up to 21 % and for H2O up to 40 %. In addition, relative total expanded uncertainty was tested in simplified procedure conforming TÜV-certification tests for both components. This test sequence consisted response time, repeatability standard deviation, lack of fit, short time drift and cross-sensitivity tests. The system passed all the individual tests except span drift test for water content. This was estimated to be mostly because of an unstable reference material. From these tests we calculated the relative total expanded uncertainty UR = 1,3 % for the oxygen over the range 0 – 25 % and UR = 6,1 % for the water content measurement over the range 0 – 40 %.

Tässä työssä kehitettiin prototyyppi päästömittauksissa käytettävästä jatkuvatoimisesta vesipitoisuusanalysaattorista. Työssä verrattiin ensin kahta eri tekniikkaa teoreettisella tasolla. Vertailu tehtiin märkä-kuiva-happi-menetelmän ja modifioidun UEGO-anturijärjestelmän välillä, jotka molemmat käyttävät zirkonium-pohjaisia happiantureita. Vertailun perusteella UEGO-anturijärjestelmästä kehitettiin prototyyppi. Prototyyppi suunniteltiin käyttäen kehitysalustaa, jonka ympärille suunniteltiin tarvittava elektroniikka lisäkorteille. Lämmitettävä ja eristetty mittauskammio suunniteltiin kahdelle sarjassa olevalle anturille. Ensimmäinen anturi mittaa jatkuvasti näytteen happipitoisuutta. Toinen antureista hajottaa näytteen vesimolekyylejä ja mittaa happitason muutosta, joka johtuu vapautuneista happi-ioneista. Vesimolekyylien hajoaminen saavutetaan nostamalla anturin elektrodin referenssijännitettä 450 mV:sta 1080 mV:iin. Työssä testattiin prototyypin alustavat suoritusparametrit. Prototyyppiä verrattiin FTIR-analysaattoria ja paramagneettista analysaattoria vasten, joita käytetään TÜV-sertifioiduissa CEMS-järjestelmissä. Testit osoittivat prototyypin toimivan lineaarisesti 21 % asti hapelle ja 40 % asti vedelle. Lisäksi suhteellinen laajennettu kokonaisepävarmuus määriteltiin molemmille komponenteille. Testit suoritettiin yksinkertaistetulla järjestelyllä, jota käytetään TÜV-hyväksyntätesteissä. Järjestely sisälsi vasteaika-, toistettavuuden keskihajonta-, epälineaarisuus-, lyhyen aikavälin ryömintä- ja ristikkäisvaikutustestit. Järjestelmä läpäisi kaikki yksittäiset testit paitsi aluepisteen ryömintätestin vedelle. Tämän arvioitiin johtuvan enimmäkseen epävakaasta referenssimateriaalista. Testien perusteella laskettiin suhteellinen laajennettu kokonaisepävarmuus. Hapelle saatiin UR = 1,3 % alueelle 0 – 25 % ja vedelle UR = 6,1 % alueelle 0 – 40 %.
