Abstract
Energy efficiency of a cloud computing infrastructure is an increasingly important issue for IT operators of data centers. Increasing energy costs of data centers and environmental awareness have motivated research into energy efficient and power proportional cloud computing infrastructure. Research on energy efficient and power proportional cloud computing infrastructure is divided mainly into two categories: power aware storage architectures, and energy efficient processing architectures. Energy efficient storage solutions mainly focus on the use of solid state disk and on keeping storage in idle or off state. On the other hand efficient processing solutions can be divided into using on low-power processors, energy aware caching, and dynamic resource provisioning. This Thesis aims to investigate and evaluate applications of efficient storage and processing techniques. These techniques, their applicability and limitations are analysed, evaluated, and compared with each other. This Thesis also analyses the behaviour of the Solr search engine on solid state disk and conventional hard disk. Solr search engine is a fairly popular enterprise search platform. Thus, the effect of the underlying storage technology for Solr engine running on top of solid state and hard disks is compared and analysed with respect to energy efficiency and cost concerns. Advantages and disadvantages of different storage systems for Solr search engine are discussed.
