Abstract
This thesis is about visual observing and describing in multiple media the ways in which furniture and architecture can be experienced together. In addition to studying the theory behind the act of observing and testing it in observing the relationships of furniture and architecture, the thesis investigates the multitude of ways to communicate the visual observations through drawing, painting, photography and writing. A conversation with the Belgian architect and professor Jan De Vylder sheds further light to the process of observing and its meaning to the work of a creative individual, with the topic of the relationship between architecture and furniture always in the background as the frame of reference. While the conversation with Jan is a recording of spontaneously expressed ideas, the following literature overview presents three more academically articulated points of view to the topic of observing. In the last part the theory of observing and image making learned in the literature overview is implemented into practice by observing two buildings, one that is existing and one that is imagined, together with their furniture. The existing building is Villa Mairea by Aino and Alvar Aalto in Noormarkku, known for its holistic design and the synergy between its construction and furnishing. The design of the imaginary one, the villa by the sea, will bend and reverse the common idea of a design process as the the task is begun by creating a piece of architecture starting from the design of three pieces of furniture and their observation. The intention of this research is not to arrive at fixed conclusions about ways of seeing or the relationship of architecture and furniture, but to document the efforts of making observations by using the relationship of the two as a testing ground. The intention of the unprejudiced circular process of seeing the physical world around us, translating the physical world into a picture, seeing the physical world a fresh through the picture is to arrive at places that could not have been imagined beforehand. Therefore, the aim of the work is, in fact, to increase consciousness of the liberating effects of being able to observe and discover the world.Tämä diplomityö tutkii eri medioiden avulla visuaalista havainnointia sekä niitä lukuisia tapoja, joilla huonekalu ja arkkitehtuuri voidaan kokea yhdessä. Työ esittelee havainnointia käsittelevää teoriaa ja soveltaa sitä huonekalun ja arkkitehtuurin välisen suhteen havainnointiin, minkä lisäksi työssä tutkitaan visuaalisen havainnoinnin kommunikointia piirtämisen, maalaamisen, valokuvaamisen ja kirjoittamisen välityksellä. Keskustelu arkkitehti ja professori Jan De Vylderin kanssa avaa edelleen ympäristön havainnoinnin prosessia ja sen merkitystä luovan yksilön työssä. Huonekalun ja arkkitehtuurin suhteen tematiikka luo keskustelulle konkreettisen viitekehyksen. Keskustelu Janin kanssa taltioi spontaanisti esitettyjä ideoita havainnoinnista, huonekaluista ja arkkitehtuurista, kun taas sitä seuraava kirjallisuuskatsaus esittelee kolme akateemisemmin artikuloitua näkökulmaa havainnoinnin tematiikkaan. Työn viimeisessä osassa havainnoinnin ja kuvantekemisen teoriaa sovelletaan käytäntöön tarkastelemalla kahta rakennusta, joista toinen on olemassa ja toinen kuviteltu. Olemassa oleva rakennus, Aino ja Alvar Aallon suunnittelema Villa Mairea Noormarkussa, on tunnettu esimerkki arkkitehtuurin ja huonekalujen käymästä keskinäisestä vuoropuhelusta. Villa Maireassa huonekalut ja arkkitehtuuri muodostavat saumattoman, kokemusta rikastavan kokonaisuuden. Kuvitellun villan suunnittelu taas alkaa tavanomaisesta suunnitteluprosessista poikkeavasta lähtökohdasta: kolmesta olemassa olevasta huonekalusta ja niiden tarkastelusta. Tämän työn tarkoitus ei ole löytää tai muodostaa kiinteitä päätelmiä asioiden katsomisesta tai huonekalujen ja arkkitehtuurin näkemisestä yhdessä, vaan dokumentoida erilaisia yrityksiä havainnoida ja käyttää huonekalun ja arkkitehtuurin suhdetta tämän havainnoinnin koealustana. Työn havainnointiosuudessa käytetään ennakkoluulotonta kehämäistä prosessia, jossa katsellaan meitä ympäröivää fyysistä maailmaa, tulkitaan fyysinen maailma kuvaksi, katsellaan meitä ympäröivää fyysistä maailmaa kuvan kautta jne. ja jonka tarkoituksena on löytää yhä uusia ajatusreittejä ja saavuttaa ennalta-arvaamattomia lopputuloksia. Siten työn tavoitteena on lisätä tietoisuutta rajoittamattoman havainnoinnin ja löytämisen vapauttavista vaikutuksista.Description
