Abstract

Training nurses to use medical devices is a critical aspect of patient safety and care. However, nurses face numerous challenges in this training due to various pressure factors. Despite interactive computer-based guidelines have proved to be effective for education purposes, only a few studies have explored their application in medical device training. This thesis initiated with a scoping literature review to identify existing gaps, followed by an empirical study utilizing interviews, usability testing, and questionnaires within two groups of registered nurses (n = 10). This approach uncovered practical factors and investigated the impact of an interactive computer-based guideline on nurses’ experiences in medical device training. A total of 15 factors were identified that affect nurses’ experiences in medical device training, reflecting how nurses learn, what they learn and who they are. These factors, through their interconnected effects, can either enhance or impede nurses’ experiences and training outcomes. The results show that a setup wizard, a specific type of interactive computer-based guideline for medical device training, clearly boosts nurses’ confidence and satisfaction. It provides a clear, step-by-step guidance that promotes a novel and effective learning process, despite a technology adoption gab for senior nurses. The thesis highlights the multifaceted and dynamic impact of various factors on nurse training and proposes that the use of an interactive computer-based guideline could improve the accessibility, effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction of medical device training. Such enhancements are crucial for the successful use of medical devices, minimizing operational errors and ultimately improving both patient safety and nurses’ well-being.
