Abstract

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is a set of protocols that allow devices in a Local Area Network (LAN) to communicate with each other. UPnP capable devices can automatically discover other devices and access the services of each other. UPnP protocol is suitable in home networking where people buy a new device, plug it to the network and then the device handle itself all the necessary things in order to access the resources of the network. The UPnP protocol is limited to one LAN only since devices use multicast to announce their presence or absence and router does not allow multicast to cross from one LAN to another. Devices and services of one LAN will not be available to another LAN. The objective of this thesis is to develop a solution to connect different UPnP home networks. Our research focused on how to connect UPnP networks without sending the multicast packet from one LAN to another. We also consider NAT and basic security features in our solution.
