Abstract

Agnico Eagle Finland Kittilä gold mine is located in Lapland about 40 km northeast of Kittilä. The mine has traditionally used muck sampling to determine the average stope gold grade. Muck sampling is problematic when used with remote loading, as the operator is no longer able to collect samples directly from the loader’s bucket. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the suitability of drill cuttings sampling in average stope gold grade estimation. The research focuses on the accuracy, precision, representativeness, strengths and weaknesses of drill cuttings (sludge) sampling, as well as a rough evaluation of costs and time demand. One sample per drill rod was collected from 15.7 m standalone holes that were drilled with a cable bolter rig. The samples were split with a sample divider during sampling. The literacy review introduces the theory of sampling originally developed by Pierre Gy, the theory's different types of sampling errors, and the prerequisites of representative sampling. The most relevant type of error is the fundamental sampling error, which cannot be eliminated, only reduced. The equation of the fundamental sampling error can be used to estimate the size of a representative sample mass. Additionally, geostatistical methods for sampling analysis for example, the variogram, as well as different methods for analysing drillhole spacing, are reviewed. Based on the results, sludge sampling has worse precision than muck sampling. Sludge sampling could not systematically produce average grades that were close to the averages given by muck sampling when looking at individual stopes. However, the differences were evened out on a wider scale, and the combined sludge and infill drillcore composite samples generated a tonne-weighted average gold grade, which was -5 % of the average given by muck sampling. The conducted sludge sampling was found not to be representative. The accuracy could be improved with longer sludge holes that reach the stope’s upper parts and improve spatial representativeness. The weakness of sludge sampling is its sensitivity to errors. The sample recovery rate was poor, and frequent extraction errors were observed during sampling. Further tests are recommended with the aim of improving the recovery, as well as determining the effect of longer holes on sampling accuracy.

Agnico Eagle Finland Kittilän kultakaivos sijaitsee Lapissa noin 40 km koilliseen Kittilän kirkonkylältä. Kaivos on perinteisesti käyttänyt kauhanäytteenottoa louhoksen keskipitoisuuden selvittämiseksi. Kauhanäytteenotto on kuitenkin ongelmallista etälastauksessa, sillä operaattori ei enää pysty keräämään näytteitä suoraan lastauskoneen kauhasta. Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena oli arvioida porasoijanäytteiden soveltuvuutta louhoksen keskipitoisuuden arvioinnissa. Tutkimuksessa keskityttiin soijanäytteenoton tarkkuuden, edustavuuden, vahvuuksien ja heikkouksien, sekä karkeaan kustannusten ja ajantarpeen arviontiin. Porasoijanäytteitä kerättiin yksi näyte per porakanki 15.7 m pitkistä rei’istä, jotka oli porattu vaijerointikoneella. Näytteet jaettiin näytteenjakajalla näytteenoton aikana. Tutkimuksen teoriaosassa esitellään alun perin Pierre Gyn kehittämä näytteenoton teoria, teorian erilaiset näytteenoton virhetyypit, sekä edustavan näytteenoton edellytykset. Merkittävin virhetyyppi on näytteenoton perusvirhe, jota ei voida täysin poistaa, vain pienentää. Perusvirheen yhtälön avulla voidaan arvioida edustavan näytemassan kokoa. Lisäksi teoriaosassa esitellään geostatistisia menetelmiä, kuten variogrammi, näytteiden ja näytteenoton analysointiin, sekä erilaiset menetelmät näytteenottotiheyden analysoimiseksi. Työn tulosten perusteella soijanäytteiden pitoisuuksien hajonta on suurempaa kuin kauhanäytteillä. Soijanäytteenotto ei pystynyt systemaattisesti tuottamaan keskipitoisuuksia, jotka olivat lähellä kauhanäytteenoton antamia keskipitoisuuksia yksittäisiä louhoksia tarkasteltaessa. Määritetyt erot kuitenkin tasoittuivat laajemmassa skaalassa, ja soijanäytteenotolla yhdistettynä tuotantokaira näytteenottoon saatiin tonnipainotettu keskipitoisuus, joka oli -5 % kauhanäytteenoton antamasta keskipitoisuudesta. Suoritettua soijanäytteenottoa ei voida pitää edustavana. Tarkkuus voisi parantua pidemmillä soijarei’illä, jotka ylettyvät louhoksen yläosiin ja parantavat avaruudellista edustavuutta. Soijanäytteenoton heikkoutena on sen herkkyys virheille. Näytteen talteenottoprosentti oli keskimäärin huono johtaen suureen erotusvirheeseen. Tulosten perusteella suositellaan lisätestejä, joissa tavoitteena on talteenoton parantaminen, sekä määrittää pidempien reikien vaikutus näytteenoton tarkkuuteen.
