Abstract

This thesis presents a detailed technical and economic analysis of the implementation of a pumped hydro storage (PHS) system in the Canarian Island of Tenerife. As in many isolated power systems, the electricity generation on the island is primarily dependent on fossil fuels, resulting in high generation costs and environmental impacts, despite the large renewable potential existing in the Canarian archipelago. However, the Canarian government plans to make a radical energy transition by extensive development of Renewable Energy in the next years, especially to 2025, focusing on windpower (onshore and offshore) and solar photovoltaic systems. Integrating this Renewables generation is challenged by its inherent intermittency. However energy storage systems appear to offer an optimal choice for harnessing the excess renewable electricity (excess beyond simultaneous power demand), and outputting this power to the grid in period of low RES gneration. After studying different energy storage alternatives, Pumped Hydro storage (PHS) was selected as the most suitable option for Tenerife. A simulation of the power system for 2020-2060 is conducted using the EnergyPLAN modelling tool. The input assumptions were electricity demand and its hourly distribution, renewable and conventional power installed for each year, hourly distribution of renewable power and the parameters of the storage facility. Three different locations with distinct properties were are chosen to be analysed, mainly characterised by power of hydro machines and capacity of reservoirs. Six scenarios were created based on different PHS implementation options. The economic analysis addresses total investment costs, and operation and maintenance (O&M) costs of each scenario and the revenues produced by the sale of the excess electricity (CEEP) harnessed. Regarding the design of the different scenarios, it is demonstrated that the nominal power of the PHS is more relevant to a positve investment case than the energy capacity of the reservoir. Indeed implementing multiple power units further enhaces benefits, but the additional costs of multiple plants is not necessarily justified by the benefits. Using double penstock systems would allow one to reduce CEEP further, compared to single penstock systems; the latter systems already having half the (wasted) CEEP of a baseline non-PHS system. The assumed costs for double penstock systems does show that this addition would be cost-effective. It should be noted that the assumed interest rate constitutes a very significant parameter. Furthermore, in order to recover investment costs, it is found that the construction of the storage system should be postponed until at least 2025 owing to the absence of renewable power available during the initial years - thus there would be little CEEP for the plant to absorb and thus very limited benefits.

Tämä opinnäytetyö esittelee yksityiskohtaisen teknisen ja taloudellisen analyysin pumpattujen vesivarastointilaitteiden (PHS) käyttöönotosta Kanariansaarten Teneriffan saarella. Kuten monissa erillisissä sähköjärjestelmissä, saaren sähköntuotanto riippuu pääasiassa fossiilisista polttoaineista, mikä aiheuttaa suuria tuotantokustannuksia ja ympäristövaikutuksia huolimatta suuresta uusiutuvien energialähteiden mahdollisuuksista Kanariansaarten saaristossa. Eri skenaarioiden suunnittelun osalta on osoitettu, että PHS: n nimellisteho on positiivisen investointitapauksen kannalta tärkeämpää kuin säiliön energiakapasiteetti. Useiden tehoyksiköiden toteuttaminen lisää entisestään etuja, mutta useiden kasvien lisäkustannukset eivät välttämättä ole perusteltuja hyötyjen vuoksi. Kaksinkertaisten kassaporausjärjestelmien käyttö mahdollistaisi CEEP: n vähentämisen edelleen verrattuna yksittäisiin kassapetojärjestelmiin; jälkimmäiset järjestelmät ovat jo puolet (hukkaan) CEEP: stä perustilaan, joka ei ole PHS-järjestelmä. Kaksinkertaisten kassaporausjärjestelmien oletetut kustannukset osoittavat, että tämä lisäys olisi kustannustehokasta. On huomattava, että oletettu korko on erittäin merkittävä parametri. Lisäksi investointikustannusten takaisinperimiseksi todetaan, että varastointijärjestelmän rakentamista on lykättävä ainakin vuoteen 2025 mennessä, koska uusiutuvan energian puuttuminen ei ole käytettävissä alkuperäisten vuosien aikana - joten laitokselle olisi vähän CEEP: tä ja siten erittäin rajalliset hyödyt.
