Abstract
Due to the constantly changing business environment and innovative technology developments traditional manufacturing companies need to consider fundamental changes to their strategy to stay competitive. Product based companies have seen to be moving toward service orientation to conquer customers from new markets. Also for example the aim to reduce a company’s raw material consumption has accelerated the need for change. These profound strategy change implementations require companywide attention and therefore it is important for the company’s management to find the most engaging way to commit the employees to the change. This research paper focuses on the role of employees emotions and meaningful work in strategic change from a managerial perspective. The aim of this study is to examine the relation between the experienced meaning in work and employees commitment to change and how emotions at work are related to the commitment to change. For this bachelor’s thesis a survey data was received from a project study TUNTO2. TUNTO2 is a project study of Aalto University’s Center for Knowledge and Innovation Research examining the role of emotions in service based strategies. The quantitative data received included survey answers from employees working in a Finnish company undergoing strategical changes toward service orientation. The survey questions examined in this research were related to commitment to change, meaningful work and positive and negative emotions at work. A statistical analysis was conducted from the survey data and together with previous literature, the role of emotions and meaningful work in commitment to change was examined. The limitations of this research mainly relate to the small sample size of the participants in the survey. Despite the limitations the results provide useful insights for managers considering strategy implementations. Also propositions for future research related to the role of emotions in the time of strategical change are introduced.Description
