Abstract
Tutkielmaan osallistui yhteensä kahdeksan viidennen luokan oppilasta Espoon peruskouluista. Tutkielma-aineisto koostui kyselylomakkeella kerätystä aineistosta sekä opetuskokonaisuuden aikana tehdyistä muistiinpanoista. Kirjallinen aineisto analysoitiin diskurssianalyysin keinoin.
This Masters thesis in art education explores the learning spece between art and science through a data-driven, art-based action research approach. The aim of the study was to understand what kinds of learning experiences were generated by a teaching module that combined visual arts and phy-sics, and how a pedagogical approach emphasizing the spece between art and science potentially influenced the accessibility of the subject matter as well as students overall enthusiasm for learning.
The teaching module was implemented in collaboration with Aalto Uni-versity Junior, emphasizing integrative approaches of phenomenon-based and inquiry-based learning, along with STEAM pedagogy. A total of eight fifth-grade students from comprehensive schools in Espoo participated in the study. The research material consisted of data collected through ques-tionnaires and notes taken during the teaching module. The written mate-rial was analyzed using discourse analysis. The analysis resulted in five lin-guistic discourses that described students experiences of a learning envi-ronment that transcended subject boundaries and was interactive and meaningful. The art-based, experiential working methods were perceived as supportive of students’ affective and holistic learning.
Based on the results of the study, combining art and science can provide a pedagogically meaningful, dialogical space for learning. However, not all students engaged with this space equally easy, which highlighted the teachers role as a professional, sensitive, and pedagogically skilled facilitator. Therefore, the results indicate that the learning space between art and science can enhance the meaningfulness of learning from the students perspective. However, it requires the teacher to have pedagogical sensiti-vity, subject-matter knowledge and the ability to design well-structured learning units.
