Abstract
This thesis focused on exploring the relationship between the body, sports, and masculinity through clothing design. The thesis consists of a theoretical and an artistic part.
The theoretical part examines how sports construct masculinity, how the body is an instrument of masculinity, and the image of the male body in the context of popular culture and fashion. In addition, the theoretical part examines how and why this type of masculinity has been embraced, subverted, and eroticized in gay culture through the body and clothing. The theoretical part serves as the foundation for the artistic part.
The artistic output of the thesis is a collection of five looks that aims to deconstruct the heteronormative imagery of sports by combining elements inspired by hockey equipment with imagery from gay culture.
Visual research and object analysis played an important role in the design process. The design of the collection emphasized the choice of materials, silhouettes, and details, as well as the relationship between revealing and concealing of the body. The aim of the collection is to create visual contrast and highlights how the codes of masculinity in sports can be both represented and subverted.
The conclusion of the thesis is that masculinity in sports is a concept that manifests itself culturally, historically, and through the body, influencing what kind of masculinity is desirable. Despite the heteronormativity of sports, these same ideals are repeated in gay culture, even though they can cause exclusion within the community.
Through theoretical research and artistic practice, the thesis challenges the ideals of these two worlds by revealing their contradictions and offers a perspective on the diversity of expressions of masculinity, encouraging the reader to examine their own relationship to the subject.
Tämä taiteen maisterin opinnäytetyö keskittyi käsittelemään kehon, urheilun ja maskuliinisuuden suhdetta vaatesuunnittelun keinoin. Opinnäytetyö koostuu teoreettisesta sekä taiteellisesta osuudesta.
Teoreettinen osuus tarkastelee miten urheilu rakentaa maskuliinisuutta, miten keho on maskuliinisuuden väline sekä miehisen kehon kuvastoa populaarikulttuurin ja muodin kontekstissa. Lisäksi tarkastellaan, kuinka ja miksi tätä maskuliinisuutta on homokulttuurissa omaksuttu, uudelleenmuotoiltu ja erotisoitu vartalon sekä pukeutumisen kautta. Teoreettinen osuus toimii pohjana taiteelliselle osuudelle.
Opinnäytteen taiteellisena tuotoksena syntyi viiden asukokonaisuuden mallisto, joka pyrkii purkamaan urheilun heteronormatiivista kuvastoa yhdistelemällä jääkiekkovarusteista inspiroituneita elementtejä ja homokulttuurin kuvastoa. Suunnitteluprosessissa tärkeässä roolissa oli visuaalinen taustatutkimus sekä objektianalyysi. Malliston suunnittelussa korostui materiaalin, siluettien ja yksityiskohtien valinta sekä kehon esittämisen ja paljastamisen suhde. Malliston tavoitteena on luoda visuaalista kontrastia ja tuoda esiin keinoja, joilla urheilun maskuliinisuuden koodeja voidaan esittää ja haastaa.
Opinnäytetyön johtopäätös on, että urheilun maskuliinisuus on kulttuurisesti, historiallisesti ja kehon kautta ilmenevä konsepti, joka vaikuttaa siihen, minkälainen maskuliinisuus on tavoiteltavaa. Urheilun heteronormatiivisuudesta huolimatta, homokulttuurissa näitä samoja ideaaleja toistetaan, vaikka ne voivat aiheuttaa syrjimistä yhteisön sisällä.
Teoreettisen ja taiteellisen tutkimuksen avulla tutkielma haastaa näiden kahden maailman ihanteet paljastamalla niiden ristiriitaisuudet ja tarjoaa näkökulman maskuliinisuuden ilmaisun monimuotoisuuteen sekä kannustaa lukijaa tarkastelemaan omaa suhdetta aiheeseen.
