Abstract
This master's thesis explores Baltic culture’s preservation, protection, and contemporary reinterpretation, focusing on Latvian heritage and using innovative textile approaches. It emphasises the role of textiles as a repository of cultural identity. It examines how reviving traditional and ancestral knowledge in textiles can be a powerful means to strengthen individual and collective identities.
The study employs a comprehensive methodology encompassing literature review, autoethnography, and practice-led research. Two primary research questions guide the theoretical and practical aspects of the study, addressing the reinterpretation of Baltic ancestral knowledge within contemporary textile and fashion design and redesigning a system for textile surface design to transfer forebearers wisdom in a modern context.
The thesis emphasises collaboration with local artisans and craftsmen, showcasing the integration of traditional crafts into current designs. The research also highlights the delicate balance between preserving cultural wisdom and advancing contemporary design, emphasising the potential for cultural heritage to thrive through creative exploration.
