Abstract

Cost-effective and efficient maintenance service provisioning has posed a major challenge for the equipment manufacturers who have recently transited towards maintenance services. This transition towards maintenance service business is even more challenging when organizations move from offering strictly product related maintenance services into more comprehensive service offerings. One important issue in regard to thesis the ability of the OEM to effectively measure the performance of the field equipment and based on the measured performance i.e. reliability of the equipment, make decision for implementing cost effective and efficient maintenance plans. A review of current literature shows that a small amount has been done to define frameworks and methods to measure equipments performance in terms of reliability using condition monitoring data and equipment history data. However no work has been done with respect to utilizing the equipment usage data and inspection monitoring data for reliability estimation/analysis. This thesis contributes to the body of knowledge by developing a data fusion based mechanism/model for equipment performance measurement in terms of reliability using real-time usage monitoring and inspection data. More importantly this thesis evaluates the effectiveness/added value of having data-fusion for equipment performance measurement. The study presented in this thesis has been carried out for the service division of a leading OEM. The thesis comprises of two main parts (a) literature review (b) empirical study part. The literature review introduces the equipment performance metrics used in the maintenance business and its role in the after-sales maintenance services. Furthermore the metric for equipment performance measurement is defined and specified in terms of the data required and mechanisms/methods for calculating the reliability metric has also been presented. The empirical part describes the mechanism for reliability estimation/analysis, the added advantage of using data-fusion technique and its implications on the service business. The main contributions of this thesis can be summarized as follows:. Development of the mechanism for Reliability calculation by means of defining the data fusion and integration process. Assessing the effect of data fusion and integration on the equipment/components performance (i.e. reliability value) under various scenarios. Development of service offerings, showing the added advantage of having data-fusion of usage monitoring and inspection monitoring data instead of just having inspection data or usage data for reliability estimation/analysis.
