Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to conduct a case study to identify what type of organizational learning processes are used in a post-bureaucratic organization. This is interesting because knowledge transfer in a temporary organization is both very important for continuous improvement, and very challenging to do in practice. There are two theoretical cornerstones in this thesis: Organizational learning, where previous research has concentrated on the outcomes of learning instead of learning processes, and post-bureaucratic organizations, a special case of temporary organizations with very specific challenges related to organizational learning. A “learning landscape” -framework is used to evaluate the collection of learning processes that can be identified, and the results are discussed from the perspective of a post-bureaucratic organization. The data is collected through written documents produced during the case project and interviews made after the project ended. The results of the study indicate that there exists a fourth kind of learning landscape, in addition to the three already found through other cases. The fourth, “breaking wave” -landscape describes an organization where a lot of knowledge is accumulated, but where there is limited organizational support to retain and reuse the created knowledge, and is characteristic to a post-bureaucratic organization.

Arbetets syfte är att genom en case-studie undersöka vilken typ av organisatoriska inlärningsprocesser som kan identifieras i en post-byråkratisk organisation. Ämnet är av intresse eftersom förflyttning av kunskap i en tillfällig organisation är viktig för att försäkra kontinuerlig förbättring, och eftersom de tillfälliga organisationsmodellerna ytterligare försvårar förflyttandet av existerande kunskap. Teoretiskt bygger arbetet på två grundpelare: Organisatorisk inlärning, där tidigare forskning har koncentrerat sig på utfall istället för själva inlärningsprocesser, samt den postbyråkratiska organisationen, ett specialfall av tillfälliga organisationer med väldigt specifika utmaningar relaterade till organisatorisk inlärning. Ett ramverk som kallas för ”inlärningslandskap” används för att utvärdera den samling av inlärningsprocesser som kan identifieras, och resultaten diskuteras från perspektivet av en tillfällig organisation. Data har samlats in genom skriftliga dokument som producerats under case-projektet, samt intervjuer som gjordes efter projektets slut. Resultaten tyder på att det finns en fjärde form av inlärningslandskap som inte hittills identifierats. ”Den brytande vågen” -landskapet beskriver en organisation där det finns begränsat stöd från organisationen för att bevara och utnyttja skapad kunskap, något som föreslås vara typisk för en postbyråkratisk organisation.
