Abstract
Kaksiosainen Taiteen maisterin opinnäytetyöni käsittelee muistia. Se koostuu sekä taiteellisesta, 47 minuutin pituisesta dokumenttielokuvasta ”Muistikuvia” että samannimisestä kirjallisesta osasta. Elokuva on yhteisohjaus Oliwia Tonterin kanssa. Sen yhteinen tekijä on Puola. Oliwia muutti kahdeksanvuotiaana Puolasta Suomeen. Isoisäni isä pakeni Puolasta juutalaisvainoja noin sata vuotta sitten. Myös hän päätyi Suomeen. Oliwian Puola on konkreettinen. Hänen ensimmäiset muistikuvansa ovat sieltä. Minun Puolani on abstrakti. En koskaan tavannut isoisäni isää, linkityn Puolaan ainoastaan hänen tarinansa kautta. Elokuvan tyylilaji on subjektiivinen essee-elokuva, jossa me kummatkin olemme päähenkilöitä. Varsovaan muuttaessamme toimme mukanamme henkilökohtaisen historiamme ja muistimme. Meillä kummallakaan ei ollut varsinaista yhteyttä koko kaupunkiin. Asuimme siellä lastemme kanssa seitsemän kuukautta, kuvasimme koko sen ajan elämäämme ja ympäröivää todellisuutta. Varsovan läsnäoleva, traaginen historia nousikin elokuvan kolmanneksi muistiksi. Kirjallinen osa ”Muistikuvia” painottuu enemmän omaan näkökulmaani. Käyn siinä läpi muistia sekä elokuvan kuvausten että henkilöhistoriani kautta. Minä ja Puola kadotimme juutalaisen muistin. Minun suvussani muisti vain hiipui, mutta Puolassa sen särki holokausti. Vuosikymmeniä myöhemmin sosialismi romahti. Ihmiset löysivät salatut juutalaiset juurensa ja juutalaiseen uskontoon kääntymällä liityivät takaisin sukunsa jatkumoon. Kahden sukupolven jälkeen Puolassa on yritetty löytää tietä takaisin aivan niin kuin minäkin olen tehnyt. Olemme olemassa tässä hetkessä, mutta myös menneisyys vaikuttaa meihin. Toisaalta emme ole olemassa menneisyydessä ilman nykyhetkeä. Käsittelen muistia tilana, jossa jokin asia tapahtuu toisen kerran. Muistellessa ei niinkään palata menneeseen kuin annetaan menneelle tilaa nykyhetkessä.My two-part Master of Arts Thesis deals with the memory. It consists of an 47-minute documentary film called "Recollections” and the written part comes with the same name. The film is co-directed with Oliwia Tonteri and its common factor is Poland. Oliwia moved from Poland to Finland when she was eight years old. My great-grandfather escaped from Poland from persecution of Jews a hundred years ago. He also ended up in Finland. Oliwia`s concept of Poland is a concrete one. Her first childhood memories come from there. My concept of Poland is an abstract one. I never had the chance to meet my great-grandfather. My only link to Poland is through his story. The genre of this movie is a subjective essay film. We both are protagonists. When we moved to Warsaw we accompanied us with our personal history and memories. Neither one of us has really had any touch with the whole city. We lived there with our children for seven months. All that time we were shooting the surrounding reality and our lives. Warsaw's tragic history is constantly present and it eventually became kind of the third memory of the film. The written part of "Recollection" focuses more on my own perspective. I handle my memories through my personal history and through the material we shot. Me and Poland, we both lost our Jewish memory. In my family the memory just faded, but in Poland it was ruined by the Holocaust. Decades later when socialism collapsed people found their secret Jewish roots and turned back to Jewish religion. For the past two generations in Poland they have tried to find their way back to Judaism, just as I have done. We exist in this present moment, but the past affects us as well. On the other hand, we do not exist in the past without the present. I deal my memories as a state of mind where something happens for the second time. When remembering something, we do not return to the past as much as we give time and space for the past memories to exist in the present time.Description
