Abstract

The aim of this study is to clarify how sounds and noises inside an elevator are perceived and how they affect the user experience. In other words, the product sound of an elevator was studied. Because this is a relatively new subject and there is not much literature, also suggestions for possible future product sound testing were established. Literatures about sound overall, user experience and product sound design were studied. Also examples of other products with advanced product sound are presented. From this study, a partial qualitative and quantitative analysis method was designed. A sound system was designed and built in a real elevator for this particular use. After each test-drive questionnaires were completed by the testee and finally, each test person was interviewed. Sounds and noises had an affect on user experience. By adding certain sounds, the positive experience was increased. The tone should be affected by adding sounds without increasing the overall sound volume, to take the attention from unpleasant sounds. Product sound was considered an important value-adding feature that should be developed and studied further. A sound system technology is relatively cheap. Nonetheless, it can give an additional market value as a new supplementary product. Moreover it offers the possibility for differentiation from other manufacturers products. This can be a crucial factor in competition. A totally silent elevator is expensive and difficult, if not impossible, to build. Product sound design can give a prominent alternative to achieve better user experience.
