Abstract

The amount of data in the world is increasing and so is the need for organizations to be able to benefit from it. Business analytics has become an important part of many organizations’ operations. This study utilises bibliometric analysis methods to study the business analytics research from a managerial viewpoint. The sample data was gathered from Elsevier’s SCOPUS database and contained 1639 articles. This data was analyzed with quantitative bibliometric performance analysis and science mapping methods. These methods were chosen because they made it possible to gain knowledge of the underlying themes from existing research and to map the structure of the research landscape. Science mapping methods consisted of co-occurrence analysis on keywords, co- authorship analysis, co-citation analysis and bibliographic coupling analysis. These methods also required some quantitative processing of articles to get a good picture of the research landscape. The co-citation analysis revealed four core thematic areas within existing research and the bibliographic coupling analysis resulted in three core thematic areas within the most recent research. Previous bibliometric studies related to business analytics were found to contain research about big data analytics, which has a strong connection to the subject of this thesis. This study had a different approach as the focus was on managerial and wider business analytics themes. The resulting thematic areas from this study were similar to the themes discovered in earlier studies, but this study was also able to find new thematic areas and new insights from sub-categories under the thematic areas. The results indicated that HR analytics is an underdeveloped thematic area within business analytics research compared to the other areas. Moreover, higher managerial knowledge of business analytics was suggested under many thematic areas as improvement to better utilize business analytics.
