Abstract

This Master's Thesis aimed to research factors affecting the start-up of the biological phosphorus removal at low temperature. The study was based on literature, laboratory-scale experiment and simulations. Simulations of the mathematical model were used to research the effect of different process parameters on the start-up of the phosphorus removal. According to literature used sludge retention time and the composition of the initial sludge are the prime factors affecting the efficiency of the biological phosphorus removal process and the time needed for the start-up. At lower temperature longer sludge age is needed to compensate the decrease in process kinetics. According to literature the start-up of the biological phosphorus removal can endure from one to three months. Also some failed start-ups have been reported in the literature. Laboratory experiment that lasted 65 days aimed to establish the biological phosphorus removal in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) that was held at the temperature of +10 °C. There were no significant signs of biological phosphorus removal in the lab-scale process during the experiment, for example anaerobic release or aerobic uptake of the phosphorus. It is possible, that if the experiment could have carried on over the 65 days, the biological phosphorus removal would have eventually been established. The effect that temperature, initial composition of the sludge, amount of available substrate and sludge retention time of the process have on the start-up of the biological phosphorus removal was researched with simulating the mathematical model of the process. The applied model, as the combination of activated sludge model ASM2d and phosphorus model of the Technical University of Delft TUDP (ASM2d + TUDP), were also used to model the lab-scale process of this study to see if the model could predict the behaviour of that particular process correctly. The AQUASIM 2.0 program was used as a simulator. Process start-up, sequential feature of the used process technology (SBR) and temperature dependencies of different process rates are together a combination which is causing such fast changes in the kinetics of the process reactions that the simulation of this particular combination is very challenging even if not impossible. Temperature disturbances of the lab-scale process could not be simulated. The model seems to be incapable to describe correctly the behaviour of the process in which other organisms besides phosphorus accumulating ones are having intracellular storages at the beginning of the process, as was in the lab-scale experiment. Results from the simulations of the effects of different process parameters on the start-up of the process were similar to ones stated in the literature.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli tutkia biologisen fosforinpoiston käynnistymiseen vaikuttavia tekijöitä alhaisessa prosessilämpötilassa. Tutkimus koostui kirjallisuusselvityksestä, laboratoriokokeesta ja simuloinneista, joissa eri prosessiparametrien vaikutusta fosforinpoiston käynnistymiseen tutkittiin matemaattisen mallin avulla. Kirjallisuuden perusteella alhaisessa lämpötilassa biologisen fosforinpoistoprosessin toimivuuteen ja käynnistymisnopeuteen vaikuttavat ensisijaisesti käytettävä lieteikä ja alkuperäisen lietteen koostumus. Alhaisemmassa lämpötilassa prosessi tarvitsee pidemmän lieteiän kuin korkeammissa lämpötiloissa kompensoidakseen lämpötilan aiheuttaman prosessin kinetiikan hidastumisen. Kirjallisuudessa prosessin käynnistyminen on kestänyt yhdestä jopa kolmeen kuukauteen ja myös epäonnistuneita käynnistyksiä on raportoitu. 65 päivän mittaisessa laboratoriokokeessa biologinen fosforinpoisto pyrittiin käynnistämään +10 °C laboratoriomittakaavan jaksoittain toimivassa panosreaktorissa (SBR). Koeprosessissa ei kokeen aikana juurikaan havaittu biologiseen fosforinpoistoon viittaavia muutoksia, kuten esimerkiksi fosforin anaerobista vapautumista tai sitoutumista aerobiassa. On kuitenkin täysin mahdollista, että fosforinpoisto olisi lopulta käynnistynyt jos koetta olisi voitu jatkaa yli 65 päivän. Lämpötilan, alkuperäisen lietteen koostumuksen, substraatin määrän ja lieteiän vaikutusta biologisen fosforinpoiston käynnistymiseen tutkittiin simuloimalla prosessia matemaattisen mallin avulla. Käytettyä mallia, eli aktiivilietemalli ASM2d:n ja Delftin Teknillisen Yliopiston kehittämän fosforinpoistomallin TUDP yhdistelmää (ASM2d + TUDP), käytettiin myös laboratoriokokeen prosessin mallintamisessa, jotta nähtäisiin, kuvaako malli koeprosessin toiminnan oikein. Simuloinnit suoritettiin AQUASIM 2.0 -simulointiohjelmalla. Prosessin käynnistymisen, käytetyn prosessitekniikan eli jaksoittain toimivan panosreaktorin sekä eri lämpötilariippuvuuksien yhdistelmä aiheuttaa nopeita kineettisiä muutoksia prosessireaktioissa, jotka tekevät tällaisen prosessin simuloinnin erittäin hankalaksi ellei mahdottomaksi. Koeprosessissa sattuneita lämpötilavaihteluita ei pystytty simuloimaan. Malli ei myöskään näytä kuvaavan oikein prosessia, jossa fosforia akkumuloivien organismien lisäksi myös muilla organismeilla on alkutilanteessa varastopolymeerejä, kuten koeprosessissa oli. Eri prosessiparametrien simulointien tulokset tukivat kuitenkin kirjallisuudessa esitettyjä arvioita prosessin käynnistymiseen vaikuttavista tekijöistä.
