Abstract
The subject of this thesis is improving the state of service management in an IT company by utilizing the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) process framework. The processes of configuration management, change management and incident management are introduced. The main goal of this thesis was to choose and implement a Configuration Management Database (CMDB) to improve configuration management in the company. The CMDB is a tool that is used to store information about all the components that make up the IT infrastructure, and their relationships. Requirements for the CMDB were set based on the needs of the company and ITIL best practices. Multiple commercial CMDB products were evaluated and one of them was chosen to be implemented. The implementation was analyzed against the given requirements. A survey was done with the users of the system to gather user experiences of the implementation. The resulting implementation filled all the mandatory requirements, and based on the user survey the implementation has improved the state of configuration management. Some needs for further development still exist.Diplomityössä tutkittiin mahdollisuuksia parantaa erään yrityksen IT-palvelutuotannon toimintaa käyttäen hyödyksi ITIL-kirjaston parhaita käytäntöjä. Työssä tutustuttiin ITIL-kirjaston määrittelemiin prosesseihin konfiguraationhallinta, muutoksenhallinta sekä tapahtumanhallinta. Konfiguraationhallinnan kehittämiseksi tutkittiin mahdollisuuksia ottaa käyttöön konfiguraatiotietokanta. Se on työkalu johon kootaan kaikki oleellinen tieto yrityksen IT-infrastruktuurin osista ja erityisesti niiden suhteista. Yrityksen tarpeiden pohjalta sekä ITILin parhaiden käytäntöjen avulla muodostettiin lista vaatimuksia konfiguraatiotietokannan toteutukselle. Evaluoitiin erilaisia vaihtoehtoja konfiguraatiotietokantatoteutuksiksi ja valittiin näistä. yksi. Toteutusta arvioitiin asetettujen vaatimusten perusteella ja käyttökokemuksia kerättiin kyselytutkimuksen avulla. Tuloksena syntyi toteutus, joka täyttää kaikki pakolliset vaatimukset, ja muut vaatimukset tyydyttävästi. Käyttäjäkokemusten perusteella toteutus on edistänyt konfiguraationhallinnan tilaa yrityksessä. Työssä esitetään myös muutamia lisäkehitystarpeita.Description
