Abstract

This thesis starts as a suburban infill project for Laajasalo. The thesis is divided into two parts, one urban design part and one housing design part. Laajasalo is analysed to find where an infill project could be realised. From the analysis a few areas emerge that are interesting for such an infill. The motorway entering Laajasalo is chosen for the project and is redesigned into a suburban boulevard. The Urban design part focuses on the boulevard and the centre adding housing, offices and new business premises. The boulevard and the centre are planned on the condition that a bridge for trams from Helsinki to Laajasalo is built. The housing design part starts from Laajasalo in which an aging population currently exists. There is a need for new types of housing to cater for this aging population, but also importantly, to attract a new younger generation to move to Laajasalo. One block from the boulevard is chosen for the design 'with the idea of adding housing typologies to attract both a young and aging population. The block has an interesting location with one side facing the urban boulevard and the other side facing nature and the qualities of suburban living in Laajasalo.
