Municipality's mobile feedback service - User-based designing of user interface prototype

Abstract

Municipalities are adapting e-services in a growing extent. For example, feedback can be sent to municipalities using Internet or e-mail. To increase the amount of feedback, and to make processing of feedback more efficient, municipalities want feedback in an electronic format. Municipalities also want to provide more ways for people to give feedback. The purpose of this thesis was to study the designing of a feedback service to mobile devices using usability methods. This study was made for a company specialized in spatial data and geographical information systems.

In the first phase of the study, a survey was done to collect data for creating personas that portray the most important potential user groups of the mobile service. Personas were created using data filtering and similarity analysis. Two personas were created, one of which was a primary persona and the other a supplemental persona. The extensive material available provided detailed personas.

During the study, a user interface prototype of the mobile service was created. A contextual inquiry was done, where five test subjects using the interface prototype were observed in order to find usability problems. The five test subjects represented the personas well. Test subjects found the user interface to be fluid and easy to use, but also many usability problems were found. Finally, design recommendations for the user interface were created based on the usability problems that were found.

Kunnat ovat siirtymässä yhä enemmän sähköisten palveluiden käyttöön. Esimerkiksi palautetta voi kunnille antaa Internetin ja sähköpostin kautta. Palautteenannon ja -käsittelyn tehostamiseksi kunnat haluavat palautteen sähköisessä muodossa. Toisaalta kuntalaisille halutaan myös tarjota enemmän keinoja antaa kunnalle palautetta. Tässä tutkimuksessa käsitellään erään paikkatietoalan yrityksen kunnille tarjoaman palautteenantopalvelun suunnittelua mobiililaitteille käytettävyystutkimuksen keinoin.

Tutkimuksessa suoritettiin aluksi kyselytutkimus, jonka tulosten perusteella muodostettiin suunniteltavan mobiilipalvelun tärkeimpiä potentiaalisia käyttäjäryhmiä kuvaavat persoonat käyttäen apuna suodattimia ja samankaltaisuusanalyysia. Persoonia luotiin kaksi, joista toinen oli ensisijainen persoona ja toinen täydentävä persoona. Persoonista saatiin kattavan aineiston avulla luotua hyvin yksityiskohtaiset.

Tutkimuksen aikana kehitettiin myös mobiilipalvelun käyttöliittymän prototyyppi. Tilannetutkimukseen, jossa prototyypistä etsittiin käytettävyysongelmia, kutsuttiin persoonia hyvin edustavat koehenkilöt. Koehenkilöitä tutkimukseen kutsuttiin yhteensä viisi, joista kolme edustivat ensisijaista persoonaa ja kaksi täydentävää persoonaa. Koehenkilöt kokivat prototyypin käytön pääasiassa sujuvaksi ja helppokäyttöiseksi, mutta tutkimuksessa löytyi myös monta käytettävyysongelmaa. Löydettyjen käytettävyysongelmien perusteella muodostettiin suunnittelusuositukset mobiilipalvelun käyttöliittymän kehitykselle.
