Abstract

This thesis is a conceptual analysis in which I analyze the writings of Bruno Latour and Jane Bennett regarding their notions of the concept of agency. I also examine the way in which these ideas have been applied to art education. I approach this topic through two research questions, which are: 1) How do Bruno Latour and Jane Bennett formulate the concept of agency? 2) How are these reconceptualizations of agency discussed and applied in art education research? I begin the analysis by presenting a close reading of selected writings of Latour and Bennett and I break down the way they formulate their conceptualization of agency. After the conceptual analysis, I reflect the findings of the analysis to the writings of art educators who have applied the idea of nonhuman agency to the context of art education. I conclude this thesis by presenting a summary of the findings of the conceptual analysis and the way in which Latour’s and Bennet’s conceptualizations of agency have been applied to art education. I will also discuss the possible gaps in the already existing research regarding nonhuman agency in the context of art education and lay out possible directions for further research. The aim of this thesis is to provide clarification regarding the use of the concept of nonhuman agency within a certain section of the field of new materialisms. I also seek to provide an interpretation of the possibilities and limitations of the reconceptualizations of agency by Latour and Bennett – especially in the context of art education. As a result of the conceptual analysis, I present that both Latour and Bennett hold a conception of agency that is not human centered but relational. I argue that the problematic aspects regarding these concept formulations relate to the way in which both Latour and Bennett do not further discuss to what extent the symmetry between the human and nonhuman world is valid. I also see that by claiming to offer only a methodological tool, Latour manages to ignore important critique regarding his notions of agency. I also argue that Bennett’s way to locate the source of the material vibrancy to an immanent generativity or a matter-energy common to all, is too ubiquitous and mystic. In the selected art education research articles, which applied the conceptualizations of agency by Latour and/or Bennett, three themes were most noticeable: 1) underlining the role of nonhumans as co-makers of art, 2) expanding the practices of perception and 3) highlighting the importance of abandoning control. I argue, that instead of focusing only on the pedagogical possibilities of the nonhuman agency, it should be used to disturb and reorient our assessment practices and curricula. This calls for a more nonteleological approach to art educational theories and practices.

Tämä opinnäytetyö on käsiteanalyysi, jossa tarkastellaan Bruno Latourin ja Jane Bennettin käsitystä toimijuudesta. Tarkastelen myös sitä, miten näitä käsityksiä on sovellettu kuvataidekasvatuksen tutkimuskirjallisuudessa. Lähestyn aihetta kahden tutkimuskysymyksen kautta: 1) Miten toimijuuden käsite jäsentyy Bruno Latourin ja Jane Bennettin kirjoituksissa 2) Miten näitä käsitteitä on sovellettu kuvataidekasvatuksen tutkimuksessa? Aloitan analyysin lähilukemalla Latourin ja Bennettin toimijuuteen liittyviä kirjoituksia, jonka jälkeen avaan heidän käsitteen jäsentämistä yksityiskohtaisemmin. Käsiteanalyysin jälkeen, reflektoin analyysin löydöksiä siihen, miten kuvataidekasvattajat ovat soveltaneet ajatusta ei-inhimillisestä toimijuudesta kuvataidekasvatuksen kontekstissa. Päätän opinnäytetyöni esittämällä käsiteanalyysissa sekä kuvataidekasvatuksen tutkimuskirjallisuudessa esiin nousseet keskeisimmät löydökset. Esitän myös näkemyksiäni liittyen ei-inhimillisen toimijuuden myöhempään tutkimiseen ja soveltamiseen kuvataidekasvatuksen viitekehyksessä. Tutkielman tavoite on selventää tietylle uusmaterialistiselle teoriakirjallisuudelle tyypillistä tapaa ymmärtää toimijuuden käsite. Pyrin myös esittämään tulkintani Latourin ja Bennetin toimijuuden käsitteen uudelleenmuotoilun mahdollisuuksista sekä rajoitteista - myös kuvataidekasvatuksellisesta näkökulmasta. Käsiteanalyysin pohjalta esitän, että Latourin ja Bennettin toimijuuskäsite ei ole ihmiskeskeinen, vaan relationaalinen. Esitän, että näiden käsitteiden jäsentelyssä on ongelmallista, että Latour tai Bennett eivät avaa tarkemmin sitä, missä määrin inhimillinen ja ei-inhimillinen maailma ovat keskenään symmetrisiä. Koen myös, että toteamalla tarjoavansa ainoastaan metodologisen työkalun ei-inhimillisen toimijuuden tutkimiseen, Latour välttää ajatteluunsa kohdistuvan keskeisen kritiikin. Lisäksi näen, että Bennettin tapa paikallistaa materian toimijuuden alkuperä johonkin immanentiin generatiivisuuteen sekä materian energiaan, on liian mystinen ja liukas selitysmalli. Taskastelemassani kuvataidekasvatuksen tutkimuskirjallisuudessa nousi esiin kolme keskeistä teemaa liittyen Latourin ja/tai Bennettin toimijuuskäsityksen hyödyntämiseen kuvataidekasvatuksessa: 1) ei-inhimillisten toimijoiden osallisuuden korostaminen taiteellisissa prosesseissa, 2) havaintokykyyn liittyvien toimintatapojen laajentaminen sekä 3) hallinnan menettämisen korostaminen. Sen sijaan, että ei-inhimillisen toimijuuden osalta keskityttäisiin vain pedagogisiin soveltamismahdollisuuksiin, ei-inhimillisen toimijuuden häiritä ja suunnata lähestymistapojamme uudelleen liittyen kuvataidekasvatuksen opetussuunnitelmiin sekä arviointikäytäntöihin. Tämä vaatii ei-teleologista lähestymistapaa niin kuvataidekasvatuksen arkisissa käytänteissä, että teoreettisissa keskusteluissa.
