Abstract

Objectives The main objectives of this case study were to determine the change approach and communication strategy utilized, the direction and compatibility of these together, attitudes and reactions arising from the change, and how these reactions were addressed with change communication. Additionally, the perspectives of top management and employees are compared. Summary Organizations continuously face external and internal forces driving them to change in order to endure and prosper. The way an organizational change is implemented can have significant influence on organizational performance, financial repercussions, organizational culture, and future changes. Therefore, this research aims to identify cornerstones of change approaches and change communication with a qualitative case study of an organization that has undergone a change process. Conclusions The change process was found to correspond to bottom-up approach and communication strategy participatory communication. A bottom-up approach to change and participatory communication were assumed to be used together. The central reactions and feelings found in the study were reported to vary throughout the different stages of the change process, from positive reactions to negatively framed emotions. Change communication was reported to moderate negative feelings during the change negotiation process due to a participatory approach and employee involvement in decision making.
