Abstract

Digital Delivery of digital contents like music, videos, and software applications is now a rapidly growing business due to the rise of affordable consumer broadband and devices with good network connectivity. The Digital Delivery process involves many actors like content owners, distributors, network operators and consumers, and all of them require that their rights are properly protected in digital delivery process. For example, content owners, distributions and network operator want to make profit out of the digital contents and the distribution service, and prevent unpaid usage; while consumers want to make sure that they can use the digital contents freely and easily after they have paid. To cater for these needs, multiple DRM (Digital Rights Management) standards and technologies are developed to protect all parties' rights in Digital Delivery and content consumption. Many DRM products and services developed according to DRM standards are available in the markets too. In mobile industry, OMA DRM is most recognized DRM standards due to its open nature and close involvements from many key stakeholders of mobile industry like Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Vodafone and etc. In the theoretical part of this thesis, Digital Delivery process is studied by showing all players inside the whole process chains and how they interact with each other. It is concluded that DRM is a really important aspect in Digital Delivery process. Different DRM standards 'and available DRM product and services are then reviewed. The OMA DRM is the focus, and a more detailed study is conducted in OMA DRM standards. In the experiment part of this thesis, a DRM Rights Transfer Server (DRM RTS) design model following OMA DRM standards is proposed. DRM RTS supports transfer DRM rights between mobiles when users need to transfer DRM protected contents and rights from one device to another when users need to replace, repair or upgrade their devices. This case study illustrate how to design a software application following OMA DRM standards
