Abstract

Temat för avhandlingen är mönstrade byxor för män och huvudfrågan lyder: måste mansbyxan verkligen vara enfärgad? Jag ville producera någonting konkret som baserade sig på en analytisk forskning. Idén bakom mitt ämne slog mig våren 2014 då jag kom till insikt att största delen av shorts görs i otaliga färger och mönster. Men, då man betraktade långbyxor för män var de mer eller mindre utan undantag alltid enfärgade. Som textilstuderande har jag både kunskapen och möjligheten att kunna inverka på detta och besluter mig för att studera ämnet noggrannare och därtill göra ett eget sortiment. För att kunna studera ämnet utförligt behövde jag kunskap och bakgrundsfakta inom flera olika områden. Jag studerade och analyserade dels byxan och dess historia dels herrmode och klädesmönster överlag. Jag insåg att slutresultatet skulle bli otillfredsställande ifall jag endast läste om ämnet och beslöt mig därför att dessutom både analysera klädbutikshyllornas utbud i Helsingfors och att göra intervjuer med personer i klädbranschen. Alla iakttagelser och åsikter som jag har skrivit om är givetvis subjektiva vilket naturligtvis resulterar i att min avhandling inte kan fungera som en facit med de enda rätta svaren. Min kandidatavhandling övervakades av textilläraren och mönsterdesignern Hilkka-Maija Fagerlund som professionellt vägledde mig genom hela projektet. Mitt mål med kollektionen var att producera sex par stilrena men intressanta byxor. Därefter var syftet att sälja kollektionen till ett klädesmärke vilket ledde till flera begränsande faktorer. Färgerna och mönstren i kollektionen fick absolut inte vara för vilda och spräckliga. I min kollektion låg fokuset givetvis i mönstren och speciellt mönstrens storlek eftersom ytorna de skulle användas på var relativt små. Det var också av största betydelse att tygen jag producerade fungerade perfekt, de fick inte vara för tunna men inte heller för tjocka eller för styva. Kollektionen heter Mønster, vilket är både norska och danska för ordet mönster. Min inspiration till kollektionen kan härledas till vikingarnas och kelternas värld som jag alltid funnit intressant. Enligt mig är runstenar, keltiska knopdesigner och vikingasmycken grafiskt sett väldigt inspirerande. Formgivningen är i första hand rätt linjär och anspråkslös men då man studerar den mera ingående finner man invecklade och matematiskt intressanta helheter. Detta var exakt den looken som jag ville att byxkollektionen skulle ha. Jag gjorde i första hand en kollektion av vikingarna och mindre om dem. Jag utgick främst från mina personliga visioner över temat men hade också hjälp av bilder från historieböcker och internet. Jag läste mig inte in på djupet utan som min utgångspunkt fungerade huvudsakligen det visuella. Vissa detaljer krävde givetvis ytterligare efterforskning för att undvika ödesdigra misstag. Vid tygframställningen valde jag att använda vävnings- och screentryck-teknikerna och alla mönster designades så att de går att produceras industriellt. Byxkollektionen innehåller också ett par väluttänkta, små gömda detaljer, som binder ihop sortimentet. Jag samarbetade med Ia Kähkönen, som har skräddarutbildning. Hon hjälpte mig med byxmodellen och sydde de slutliga byxorna. Vi tyckte båda att projektet fungerade bäst ifall alla de mönstrade tygen syddes om till färdiga klädesplagg. Jag tror på min avhandling och kollektion och står stolt bakom den.

The theme of my thesis is pattern pants for men and the main question is: do man's pants actually have to be one-colored? I wanted to produce something concrete, which would be based on an analytical research. The idea behind my subject hit me during spring 2014, when I understood that most of the shorts are made in countless colors and patterns. However, when you observe trousers for men they are more or less without exception always one-colored. As a textile student I have both the knowledge and the opportunity to have an effect on this and decided to study the subject more closely and in addition make an own collection. In order to study the subject in detail, I needed the knowledge and background information in several various fields. I studied and analyzed both trousers and their history, but also men’s fashion and patter design in general. I realized that the result would be insufficient if I only read about the subject. Therefore I decided to also analyze the range of the shelves in Helsinki’s clothing stores along with doing interviews with people in the clothing industry. All observations and opinions that I've written about is of course subjective, which naturally results in my thesis not functioning as a solution with the only right answers. Textile teacher and pattern designer Hilkka-Maija Fagerlund, who professionally guided me through the entire project, supervised my bachelor’s thesis. My goal with this collection was to produce six pairs of elegant but interesting trousers. Then the aim was to sell the collection to a brand, which led to several limiting factors. The colors and patterns in the collection could absolutely not be too wild and speckled. The focus in my collection was of course in the pattern and especially the size of them, since the surfaces they would be used in were relatively small. It was also vital that the fabric I produced worked perfectly; they could not be too thin nor too thick or too stiff. The name of the collection is Mønster, which is Norwegian and Danish for the word pattern. The inspiration in the collection is based on the world of the Vikings and the Celts, which I always found interesting. According to me are rune stones, Celtic knot designs and Viking jewelry really inspiring from a graphic point of view. The design is initially linear and unpretentious, but when you study it furthermore you find complex and mathematically interesting totalities. This was exactly the look that I wanted the pants-collection to have. I made the collection at first hand of the Vikings and less about them. I emanated mainly from my personal visions of the theme, but used also images from history books and the web. I did not study deeply into the topic; my starting point was mainly visual. Some details required evidently further research to avoid fatal mistakes. Within the production I chose to use weaving and screen printing techniques and all the patterns are designed so that they can be produced industrially. The collection also contains a couple of thoughtful, small hidden details, which binds together the range. I collaborated with Ia Kähkönen, who has tailor education. She helped me with the model of the pants and sewed the final trousers. We both thought that the project worked best if all the patterned fabric were sewn into finished garments. I believe in my thesis, the collection and stand proudly behind it.
