Abstract
Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena on visioida Suomen sisällissotaa esittelevä museo Vilppulankosken rannalle Mänttä-Vilppulaan. Työ on laadittu itsenäisenä tutkielmana Suomen Sisällissotamuseoyhdistys ry:lle, jonka tavoitteena on edesauttaa Suomen sisällissodasta, sen syistä ja seurauksista sekä Suomen itsenäistymisen alkuvaiheista kertovan museon perustamista Mänttä-Vilppulan kaupunkiin. Diplomityön alkaa tiiviillä, mutta kattavalla historiaosiolla, jossa kerrotaan Suomen sisällissodasta, sotaan johtaneesta yhteiskunnallisesta kehityksestä, sekä sodan vaikutuksista suomalaisessa yhteiskunnassa. Historialliset tapahtumat ja niihin liittyvä aineisto muodostavat museon pysyvän näyttelyn sisällön. Historiaosion jälkeen diplomityössä kerrotaan sisällissotamuseohankkeen heräämisestä, sen taustoista ja vaiheista, sekä esitetään perusteluja museon tarpeellisuudesta. Osiossa esitellään Suomen sisällissotamuseoyhdistys, jolle diplomityö on laadittu. Suomen sisällissotamuseo -hankkeen taustoittamisen jälkeen työssä esitellään referenssikohteita kansallista traumaa käsittelevästä arkkitehtuurista ja pohditaan historiallisesti tunneherkkien aihepiirien ja rakennustaiteen välistä suhdetta. Referenssikohteiden jälkeen esitellään suunnittelualue, uuden museorakennuksen fyysinen konteksti. Kohdassa esitellään Mänttä-Vilppulan kaupunki, Vilppulankoski sekä lähialueen rakennukset ja maisemalliset piirteet. Lopuksi keskitytään varsinaiseen sisällissotamuseosuunnitelmaan. Diplomityön tarkoituksena on toimia puheenvuorona sisällissotamuseon tarpeellisuuden puolesta ja toisaalta tuoda esille arkkitehtuurin mahdollisuuksia traumaattisten aihealueiden kollektiivisen muistamisen instrumenttina.The objective of this thesis is to envision a museum exhibiting the Finnish Civil War on the bank of Vilppulankoski in Mänttä-Vilppula. This work has been created as an independent study for the Finnish Civil War Museum Association (Suomen Sisällissotamuseoyhdistys ry), an organization whose aim is to further the founding of a museum in Mänttä-Vilppula, which would educate on the causes and effects of the Civil War as well as the first years of the Finnish independence. The thesis begins with a condensed yet thorough history section, which recounts the events of the Finnish Civil War, the societal developments that led up to it and finally its consequences on the Finnish society. Historical events and related material form the basis of the permanent exhibition. Following the history section, the thesis describes the beginning of the civil war museum initiative, its background and phases as well as introduces arguments for the need for the museum. The section presents the Finnish Civil War Museum Association, for which this thesis has been conducted. After providing the background for the civil war museum initiative, the thesis introduces reference projects of architecture dealing with national trauma and contemplates the relationship between historically sensitive topics and architecture. After the architectural references the project site, the physical context of the museum building, is presented. The section introduces the town of Mänttä-Vilppula, Vilppulankoski as well as the surrounding buildings and the features of the landscape. The final part of the thesis focuses on the actual civil war museum design. The aim of this thesis is to on one hand work as a statement for the necessity of a civil war museum and on the other to bring forth the opportunities that architecture provides as an instrument for the collective remembrance of national trauma.Description
