Abstract

A grid-forming control method is proposed for converters equipped with an LCL filter. The proposed control method is based on feedback linearization, which allows for the direct control of active power and voltage magnitude. It uses a reduced-order observer, augmented with a disturbance state to provide integral action. Transparent current control that is compatible with the proposed control method is developed for fault ride through purposes. The structure of the proposed control method enables the closed-loop poles to be freely placed in a simple manner, resulting in excellent dynamic performance. Detailed design guidelines are provided based on small-signal analysis. Experiments with a 12.5-kVA converter are used to demonstrate the excellent dynamic performance of the proposed method for both strong and weak grids in the presence of parameter errors.
