The way in which we consume music has changed rapidly. Reports show that profits for artists and labels have fallen from their late 90s height. This study aims to economically investigate contemporary music consumption while highlighting consumer beliefs and habits in order to identify novel distribution approaches. From these findings, is it possible to utilize technology to develop, or expand, effective low-cost distribution methods which allow musical artists to fund their art with their art? Novel approaches were identified, contemporary music was positioned economically, and minor economic issues were underscored through a review of economic theory and data collected from a mixed qualitative and qualitative survey questioning consumer habits and beliefs regarding contemporary music distribution. Economically speaking, contemporary music is a public good and economic issues such as the free-rider problem and tragedy of the commons have contributed to the devaluation of music. Based on consumer sentiment the largest gap in contemporary music distribution is the lack of a physical medium. Taking this into account, a novel approach was developed.en
