Mitä opimme Tapiolan uimahallista? – Modernismin suojelun ja arvottamisen haasteita

Abstract

Tapiolan uimahalli on sr-1-merkinnälllä suojeltu rakennus Tapiolan keskustassa. Uimahallia on peruskorjattu ja laajennettu 2000-luvun alussa. Rakennus on ollut suljettuna vuodesta 2016 alkaen. Syynä on allasrakenteissa pitkälle edennyt alkalikiviainesreaktio, joka on rapauttanut altaiden betonia. Joulukuussa 2021 Espoon kaupunki päätti peruskorjata rakennuksen jälleen käyttökuntoiseksi.

Tämän työn tarkoituksena on kartoittaa Tapiolan uimahallin historiaa sen suunnittelusta nykyhetkeen asti, inventoida sen nykytilaa sekä pohtia sen arvoja uimahallina ja suomalaisena liikuntaympäristönä, modernistisena rakennuksena sekä osana Suomen rakennushistoriaa. Tämän pohjalta tavoitteena on pohtia modernistisen arkkitehtuurin suojelun ja arvottamisen haasteita.

Työn alussa selvitän sekä uimahallin suunnittelijan Aarne Ervin että Tapiolan keskustan taustoja. Toisessa osassa tutkin itse uimahallin suunnittelua ja arkkitehtuuria. Sen ohella käy läpi rakennuksen muutoshistorian ja rakennushistoriallisen kerroksellisuuden. Kolmannessa osassa pohdin keinoja tulkita Tapiolan uimahallia ja mitä esimerkkejä se asettaa modernistisen arkkitehtuurin arvotuksen haasteista. Neljännessä kappaleesa käyn läpi rakennuksen arvoja eri näkökulmista. Lopuksi luokittelen uimahallin tilojen säilyneisyyttä, kuntoa ja merkittävyyttä.

The Tapiola swimming hall is a building located in central Tapiola that is protected by an sr-1-certification. The building has been renovated and expanded in early 2000s. The building has been closed since 2016 due to alkali-silica reaction that has badly eroded the concrete in the pools. The city of Espoo decided in December 2020 to renovate the building once more.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the history of the swimming hall from its designing to current day, produce an inventory of its current state and reflect on its values as a swimming hall, as a modernist building, as a Finnish sports environment and as part of the history of Finnish architecture. Based on this, the purpose of the thesis is to consider the dilemmas of the conservation and evaluation of modernist buildings.

At the start of the thesis I will go through the background of the building's designer Aarne Ervi and the city district Tapiola. After that I will go through the designing and building of he swimming hall as well describing its architecture. In the third chapter I will go through the buildings additions, changes and historical layers over the years. In the third chapter I will consider the viewpoints from which it can be wieved and the precedents it sets regarding the challenges in the evaluation of modernist archietcture. In the fourth chapter I will reflect on the different values the building has. Finally I will evaluate the preservation, condition and significance of the different spaces and parts within the building.
