Abstract
Hiusten käytöstä vaatteissa ja asusteissa löytyy lukuisia esimerkkejä, mutta kampaamoestetiikkaa ja kampaajan ammattia käytetään harvoin visuaalisena lähtökohtana vaatemallistossa, vaikka hiukset ovat keskeinen osa muotia. Tämä taiteen maisterin opinnäyte tarjoaa näkökulman, kuinka kampaajan ammattia ja kampaamoestetiikkaa voidaan käyttää vaatemalliston lähtökohtana.
Tutkimusmenetelmänä on käytäntöperusteinen tutkimus (practice-based research). Taustatutkimuksessa käytetään lisäksi kvalitatiivisia menetelmiä, kuten puolistrukturoituja haastatteluja ja havainnointia kampaajan työpäivästä, jotta saadaan ensikäden tietoa ja parempaa ymmärrystä kampaajan ammatista kokonaisuutena.
Tämä opinnäyte koostuu kahdesta osasta: kirjallinen osa käsittelee työn taustatutkimusta ja produktiivinen osa luovaa prosessia, jonka lopputuloksena syntyy viiden asukokonaisuuden mallisto.
Tutkielman teoreettinen osa keskittyy tutkimaan hiusten ja kampaajien roolia muodin kontekstissa. Tutkielma esittelee ammattikunnan historiaa ja kehitys sekä kampaajien visuaalista kuvastoa. Teoria täydentyy näiden lisäksi havainnoimalla yhtä kampaajaa yhden työpäivän ajan sekä haastattelemalla neljää eri kampaajaa.
Työn painotus on produktiivisessa osassa. Se keskittyy kuvaamaan taiteellista työprosessia, jonka lopputuloksena syntyy viiden asukokonaisuuden mallisto, joka ilmentää taustatutkimuksen aihetta. Taiteellisessa prosessissa käydään läpi malliston eri työvaiheet, vaatteen muotoilusta erilaisiin materiaalikokeiluihin.
There are numerous examples of how hair is used in clothing and accessories, but hair salon aesthetics and the profession of hairdressing are rarely used as visual research for a fashion collection, despite the fact that hair holds significant importance in fashion. This master’s thesis offers a perspective on how the hairdressing profession and hair salon aesthetics can be used as the concept for a fashion collection.
The research method is practice-based research. The background research also applies qualitative methods, such as semi-structured interviews and observation of a hairdresser’s workday, to obtain firsthand information and to get a better understanding of the profession as a whole.
This thesis consists of two parts: the theoretical part covers the background research, and the productive part focuses on the creative process, resulting in a fashion collection of five outfits. The theoretical part of the thesis examines the role of hair and hairdressers in the context of fashion. The thesis presents the history and development of the profession, as well as the visual imagery associated with hairdressers. The theory is complemented by observing one hairdresser for a full working day and interviewing four different hairdressers.
The emphasis of the thesis is on the productive part. It focuses on describing the artistic process, which results in a five-outfit collection that reflects the topic of the background research. The artistic process goes through the various stages of creating the collection, from garment design to different material experimentations.
