Abstract

While organizations are adapting themselves to maximize their production, transmission, and application of knowledge, their fundamental functions such as Marketing, Human Resource and Finance haven’t changed. Instead, these tasks are becoming digitalized at a breakneck pace with systems that are built to do the task in a specific way. Different information needs, multiple representation formats and general lack of knowledge on what to do between functions when ill fit systems are added, fragments organizations information between the used systems. Different Integrated Automation Platforms (IAP) provide fix for certain types of fragmentation and extends the life of used information systems. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of organizations that have successfully scaled automation across their organizations. In 2017, Deloitte surveyed over 400 global organizations and found that 63 percent of applied automation projects didn’t meet delivery deadlines. And according to a study by EY, 30 to 50 percent of initial automation projects fail in general. This research investigates how to mend issues caused by fragmentation of in- formation by using Technical Action Research for developing a method specifically designed to address fragmentation. As there are many things contributing to fragmentation, the solution was developed by applying different approaches forming a step by step process, called Information Mending Process (IMP). The research was conducted with three companies and the IMP, was improved upon each. The research reveals the similarity of issues that organizations face, and the necessity for them to maximize their knowledge of them. The fragmentation of information over systems went against organizations strategy and goals. The developed IMP was deemed applicable for practice, with some reservations, requiring adjustments depending on which organization uses it.
