The effects of service co-development interventions

Abstract

The developed economies have become dominated by services. Additionally, physical products, and especially software applications are increasingly valued through the services they render. The challenges created by the globalized economy and tight competition reach not only corporations, but also to the public sector. This is why both have actively started to focus on the development of services. In service processes, the users are active co-producers of the service's value. This raises the question: How do we design and develop services collaboratively with the users?

This question has awakened the interest of practitioners and university scholars of various disciplines. Researchers and practitioners have conducted numerous development and research projects consisting of co-design gatherings and co-development workshops aiming at idea generation and enhancement of the service co-development capabilities of their client organizations. However, the effects of the co-development projects are often not investigated. This thesis studies the effects of three service co-development intervention cases conducted at the Aalto University.

Based on the literature review and the empirical study, the general effects can be analysed by a framework that combines the effects on six specific attributes: co-creation, process, and network, and monological, dialogical and trialogical learning. The first three attributes were found based on the literature of service development and the following three from the learning science literature. Combining the attributes into the same analysis framework covers both (i) how the content or the results of the interventions have been implemented and (ii) how the co-development practices have been adopted in the pilot organizations.

This thesis presents a framework for analysing the effects of service co-development intervention and applies it to studying the effects in three cases. The findings indicate that the co-development interventions have produced long-term impacts for both (i) service production and (ii) service co-development practices of the case organizations. The effects of the interventions varied notably between the cases, and this thesis discusses the potential factors that affected the effectiveness of the interventions.

Palvelut hallitsevat kehittyneitä kansantalouksia. Perinteisten palveluiden lisäksi työssä fyysisten tuotteiden ja etenkin ohjelmistojen arvon voidaan katsoa muodostuvan niiden tuottamien palveluiden kautta. Talouden tilanne ja kiristynyt kilpailu koskettavat nykyään yritysten lisäksi myös julkisen sektorin toimijoita. Tämän takia molemmat ovat aktiivisesti alkaneet keskittyä omien palveluidensa kehittämiseen. Palveluprosesseissa käyttäjät ovat merkittävässä roolissa arvon yhteisluojina, mikä nostaakin esiin tärkeän kysymyksen: Kuinka suunnitella ja kehittää palveluita yhdessä asiakkaiden kanssa?

Kysymys on herättänyt niin palvelukehitysammattilaisten kuin eri tieteenalojen yliopistotutkijoidenkin mielenkiinnon. Tutkijat ja konsultit ovat järjestäneet lukemattomia erilaisia kehitys- ja tutkimusprojekteja, jotka sisältävät yhteissuunnittelutapaamisia ja yhteiskehittämistyöpajoja. Tapaamisten tarkoituksena on usein ideointi ja asiakas- tai kohdeorganisaatioiden palvelukehityskyvykkyyksien kehittäminen. Tällaisten projektien vaikutuksista on hyvin vähän tutkittua tietoa. Tämä diplomityö tutkii palveluiden yhteiskehittämisinterventioiden vaikutuksia kolmessa eri Aalto-yliopistossa toteutetussa tapauksessa.

Kirjallisuuskatsauksen ja empiirisen tutkimuksen perusteella vaikutuksia voidaan analysoida uuden kuusiosaisen mallin avulla. Mallin kuusi analyysiattribuuttia ovat yhteisluominen, prosessit ja verkosto sekä monologinen, dialoginen ja trialoginen oppiminen. Ensimmäiset kolme tulevat palvelukehityskirjallisuudesta ja kolme seuraavaa oppimiskirjallisuudesta. Attribuuttien tuominen samaan malliin saa analyysin kattamaan sekä (i) kuinka interventioiden tulokset on saatu implementoitua että (ii) kuinka interventioiden yhteiskehittämiskäytännöt on omaksuttu kohdeorganisaatioissa.

Tämä työ esittelee mallin, jolla palveluiden yhteiskehittämisinterventioiden vaikutuksia voidaan analysoida ja soveltaa sitä kolmen tapauksen vaikutusten tutkimisessa. Tulokset osoittavat, että palveluiden yhteiskehittämisinterventioilla on ollut pitkän aikavälin vaikutuksia sekä palveluiden tuotantoon että palveluiden yhteiskehittämiskäytäntöihin kohdeorganisaatioissa. Vaikutukset vaihtelivat huomattavasti tapausten välillä. Työssä käsitellään myös interventioiden vaikuttavuuteen vaikuttavia tekijöitä.
